Chapter 5 - THE FOLDER MARKED CONFIDENTIAL

Emma entered the operations room at Fort Jackson after sunset.
Her white ceremonial uniform drew every eye, but she did not seem aware of it.
General Hale met her beside the main screen.
“We have enough for fraud and conspiracy.”
“Not enough for the attack.”
“Ryan admits sending your schedule.”
“Through counsel?”
“Proffer only. Not formal yet.”
“And Linda?”
“Still denying.”
Emma placed the confidential folder on the table.
Inside were procurement records from the Poland site.
The compromised contract involved adaptive vehicle armor.
The program used classified materials designed to reduce heat signatures and protect command vehicles from guided weapons.
Meridian Defense Systems supplied faulty shielding in early batches.
Emma flagged the discrepancies.
If exposed, the company would lose contracts worth billions and face sanctions violations.
The explosion destroyed the primary evidence server.
But Captain Leah Morgan had removed one backup drive.
That drive remained missing.
Emma believed someone took it during the evacuation.
General Hale pointed toward a newly recovered email.
Ryan sent Linda a message two hours after the explosion.
IS IT DONE?
Linda replied.
SHE IS ALIVE. MOVE FASTER.
Emma read the exchange.
Her face stayed still.
Hale watched her.
“You should not see this alone.”
“I am not alone.”
“You know what I mean.”
Emma looked at the words again.
Is it done?
The sentence could refer to the attack.
Or the asset transfer.
A prosecutor would need context.
Emma needed truth.
“Let me speak to Ryan.”
“Not as his wife.”
“As the target.”
“That is still a conflict.”
“Then observe.”
Hale considered.
Finally, he agreed to a controlled meeting with attorneys present.
Ryan entered the room wearing the same clothes from the driveway.
He stopped when he saw Emma.
The shaved head.
The uniform.
The colonel insignia.
“Emma.”
She did not answer immediately.
He looked at the healing scar.
“I did not know they would hurt you.”
Her expression changed slightly.
Not surprise.
Confirmation.
“Who are they?”
Ryan looked toward his attorney.
Price said, “Answer only within the proffer terms.”
“Meridian people,” Ryan said. “My mother handled the relationship.”
“Who asked for my schedule?”
“Viktor.”
“Why did you send it?”
“He said he needed to avoid conflicts.”
Emma’s breathing remained slow.
“You believed a foreign defense executive needed my classified movement schedule to avoid a meeting?”
“I did not know it was classified.”
“It came from my secure calendar.”
“You left the tablet at home.”
“I trusted my husband.”
Ryan looked down.
Emma continued.
“Why did you ask if it was done?”
“The incapacity filing.”
“The filing happened after the explosion.”
“I meant the neurologist report.”
“Linda answered that I was alive.”
Ryan’s face tightened.
“I do not know why she wrote that.”
Emma leaned closer.
“Did you want me dead?”
“No.”
“Did you want me silent?”
He did not answer.
“Ryan.”
“Yes.”
The word barely carried.
Emma sat back.
He began speaking faster.
“I wanted the investigation to stop. I wanted you home. I wanted one part of our life not controlled by the Army.”
“You gave foreign contractors my schedule.”
“I thought they would pressure command.”
“You filed me as mentally incompetent.”
“My mother said it was temporary.”
“You transferred my money.”
“We were building something.”
“With stolen funds.”
“I was trying to build a life where I was not just Colonel Carter’s husband.”
The rank was new.
But the resentment was old.
Emma finally understood.
This was not only greed.
Ryan experienced her success as subtraction.
Every promotion made him feel smaller.
Linda fed that wound until betrayal felt like restoration.
Emma stood.
Ryan’s eyes filled.
“Please do not leave.”
She looked at him.
“You already arranged that.”
She walked out.
Behind the observation glass, General Hale said nothing.
Emma reached the corridor before the first tear moved down her face.
She wiped it away with one gloved finger.
Then Major Keller approached holding an evidence bag.
Inside was a small backup drive.
“We found it in Linda’s purse.”
Emma looked at the label.
POLAND PRIMARY SERVER BACKUP.

Linda had carried the missing evidence out of the mansion.
The drive could prove who ordered the explosion.
