Two years after the balcony, Claire resigned as co-trustee.
Everyone assumed Margaret finally got what she wanted.
Claire laughed when she heard.
The truth was simpler.
She was tired.
Not incapable.
Not defeated.
Done.
For six years, nearly every argument with the Morgans had passed through a governance role she accepted because Edward believed she could protect the trust from family blind spots.
She had.
Then the role became fused with trauma.
Every board packet reminded her of Daniel.

They appointed Elena Brooks, a sixty-year-old fiduciary lawyer with no Morgan family relationship.
Claire transferred records properly.
No symbolic speech.
Then she walked out of her final meeting.
Freedom felt less dramatic than expected.
She went to lunch.
Ordered fries.
Then therapy.
Career.
Claire returned to compliance law but moved away from family-controlled companies.
Later became general counsel for a national nonprofit housing organization.
Lower pay than Morgan-world compensation.
Still comfortable.
More satisfying.
Then relationships.
She dated slowly.
No rush.
Eventually met Andrew Collins, an emergency physician who knew her entire history before their fifth date because Claire hated surprises now.
He did not “save” her.
