Chapter 5 - Insurance

Then he began managing food.
Supplements.
Tea.
Appointments.
Visitors.
Staff.
Lupita was the first person to challenge him.
She had worked for Rebecca since before the marriage.
Late forties.
Soft hands.
Sharp eyes.
She ran the house, the kitchen, the laundry, the flower deliveries, and, when necessary, the emotional weather.
Daniel disliked her.
“She watches me like I’m stealing silver,” he said.
Rebecca replied, “Lupita would catch you before you reached the drawer.”
He did not laugh.
That should have mattered.
When Rebecca’s illness worsened, Daniel tried to fire Lupita.
Rebecca refused.
Then Daniel stopped bringing drinks near her when Lupita was in the room.
Lupita noticed.
Arthur noticed when Lupita called.
Three weeks before the ICU, Arthur visited Rebecca privately while Daniel was at a board lunch.
He found her wrapped in a blanket in her study, thinner than he had ever seen her.
Lupita stood nearby with red eyes.
Arthur placed a prepaid phone on the desk.
Rebecca frowned.
“What is this?”
“Insurance.”
“I have a phone.”
“Daniel controls it too often.”
“He doesn’t control it.”
Arthur only looked at her.
Rebecca looked away.
That was the first crack in her denial.
Arthur continued.
“The home cameras have been separated from the main network. Lupita has access. I have access. This phone has no connection to your shared plan.”
Rebecca stared at the device.
“You think he’s hurting me.”
“I think your body is deteriorating while your husband isolates you and asks increasingly specific questions about assets he should not know exist.”
She closed her eyes.
Arthur’s voice softened.
“Rebecca, I am not asking you to accuse him before you are ready. I am asking you to survive long enough that readiness remains yours.”
That sentence saved her.
The next week, she used the prepaid phone to photograph documents Daniel left on the printer.
Draft transfer requests.
Questions about her incapacity plan.
A private memo from Celeste Arden suggesting that “speed may be necessary if R’s condition continues declining.”
R.
Not Rebecca.
R.
An asset with a pulse.
Arthur moved fast after that.
Original documents removed from the wall safe.
Digital locks changed.
Staff rotated.
Lupita instructed to leave the house if Daniel became aggressive.
Evidence protocols prepared.
Hospital contacts quietly notified.
The brown envelope placed behind the painting because Arthur believed Daniel’s greed would make him search after Rebecca appeared closest to death.
Arthur had called it bait.
Rebecca called it desperate.
Arthur said, “Most traps are.”
Now the trap had closed.
Daniel was in the house.
The cup was in evidence.

The phone was under Rebecca’s hand.
And Arthur Crane stood beside her bed like a man who had waited years to be underestimated and had finally grown bored.
