Chapter 8 - Ryan Said the Bruises Were From “Stopping Her From Hurting Herself”
That was his first formal explanation.
Grace had been hysterical.
Trying to leave while exhausted.
The stone path outside the guesthouse was uneven.
She could have fallen.
He stopped her.
She resisted.
Bruises happened.
Rachel asked:
“Did Grace threaten self-harm?”
“No.”
“Was she intoxicated?”
“No.”
“Confused?”
“No.”
“Did she say she planned to drive after drinking?”
“No.”
“So what specific harm were you stopping?”
Ryan answered:
“She was out of control.”
Meaning:
angry.
Crying.
Determined to leave.
Not incapacity.
Then Ryan shifted.
“I was trying to keep the family together until we could talk.”
That was closer.
He used force to prevent a separation he feared would become permanent.
Then Diane.
Why say:
“She got what she deserved”?
Her explanation:
Grace had kicked Ryan while struggling.
“He was covered in bruises too.”
True.
Ryan had a bruise on his shin.
Grace had kicked backward while he held her.
Diane interpreted:
Grace attacked first.
Chronology mattered.
Then Diane admitted she helped remove Grace’s car keys.
“She was emotional.”
Who authorized that?
Nobody.
Then she brought contracts to the guesthouse every morning.
Why?
Because she believed resolution required signature.
Then one text to Ryan:
Do not let her run to Jack until she signs. He’ll blow everything up.
There.
“Do not let her run.”
Could mean persuade.
Could mean physically stop.
Context mattered.
Then another:
Once the bank package is final she can scream all she wants.
Diane later said she meant:
the financing would become secure enough to survive family conflict.
Probably.
Still ugly.
Then Ryan texted:
She’s not signing.
Diane:
Then she stays put until she understands what she’s doing.
That became one of the strongest pieces of evidence of coordinated coercion.
Not necessarily planning bruises.
Not necessarily planning assault.
But deciding Grace’s movement should depend on:
compliance.
The family lawyers stopped arguing about whether the guesthouse door had technically been unlocked.
