Chapter 8 - GWEN’S SIDE OF THE STORY
Margaret’s motive came out in deposition.
After Dad died, she discovered hidden debt.
The house was not paid off.
Retirement was smaller than expected.
She panicked.
At first, maybe my money truly helped.
Then lifestyle expanded.
Paige depended on her.
Mom depended on me.
Then Gwen got sick.
Sympathy increased my transfers.
That was the moral collapse.
Margaret monetized illness.
Dana asked her:
“Did you believe Gavin’s money belonged to you?”
“He is my son.”
“That was not my question.”
Pause.
“Family money belongs to family.”
“And Gwen?”
“She married in.”
There it was.
Gwen was never fully family to her.
Not person.
Resource.
Dana asked about the dishwater.
Margaret said:
“She was disrespectful.”
No remorse.
That mattered more to me than the money.
Fraud can be rationalized.
Humiliation exposes hierarchy.
Mom believed Gwen deserved less.
That was the core.
Then prosecutors found a voice note.
Margaret to Paige:
Keep Gwen scared. If she thinks Gavin still loves her, she’ll start asking questions.
I listened once.
Never again.
The emotional abuse was not side effect.
It was strategy.
The next voice note showed that keeping Gwen afraid had been deliberate.
What made Chapter 8 harder than the one before was not another dramatic revelation. It was accumulation.
One document could be explained away.
One strange transfer could be called a mistake.
One missed call could be bad timing.
One cruel sentence could be blamed on stress.
But patterns survive excuses.
Dana taught us to build timelines instead of arguments. Dates. Amounts. Login records. Medical appointments. Phone settings. Messages. Who knew what, and when.
That discipline kept us from exaggerating.
It also kept Margaret from shrinking what happened into “family conflict.”
The more we documented, the clearer the architecture became.
This was not one bad afternoon.
