Chapter 1 - The Whisper At The Foot Of The Stairs

Warm late-afternoon light spilled through the two-story estate foyer, glinting off polished white marble and the brass railing of the open mezzanine above. Rachel Walker stood near the edge in her emerald-green dress, one hand still half-raised toward the blue glass-bead necklace at her throat. Behind her, Eleanor Walker stood close enough to smell of perfume and control.

Before Rachel could step away, Eleanor grabbed the necklace at her throat, lifted a small black pair of scissors, and cut through the strand.

The necklace snapped.

Blue glass beads scattered across the mezzanine floor like bits of shattered sky.

“If you can’t bear children, get out of here—you useless thing!” Eleanor shouted.

Rachel turned, stunned, one hand flying to her bare throat. She had no time to speak. Eleanor planted both hands on her shoulders and shoved hard.

Rachel fell backward over the edge.

She screamed as her body dropped into the open foyer. On the way down, her upper back struck the outer side of the staircase railing with a brutal jolt that twisted her angle, but the impact did not stop her. She kept falling toward the marble floor below.

At that exact moment, the main hall door opened.

Mark Walker stepped in and looked up.

“No... no,” he shouted, horror breaking across his face.

He ran straight toward the spot beneath her, threw his arms upward, and caught her just before she hit the stone. The force drove him down onto one knee. Rachel clutched his shoulders, trembling and gasping, but she was conscious.

Mark held her tightly against his chest, one hand cradling the back of her head as he checked her face. By the time he looked up, Eleanor had already descended the staircase and stopped a few paces away, unruffled and cold.

“It’s just as well that a thing like her is gone,” Eleanor said.

Mark’s face changed. The panic left first. Then came the rage.

Rachel weakly gripped the lapel of his charcoal suit and pulled him closer. Her lips brushed his ear. She whispered something so softly that Eleanor could not hear a single word.

Mark froze.

His eyes widened.

Very slowly, he turned his head toward his mother.

For the first time since Rachel fell, Eleanor’s confidence cracked.

Mark carefully lowered Rachel into a safe seated position at the foot of the stairs, made sure she was supported, then stood. He walked straight toward Eleanor. She stepped back half a pace, searching his face for an answer she suddenly feared she already knew.

His palm cracked across her cheek with one hard slap.

Eleanor reeled, one hand flying to her face. She stared at him in confusion that quickly became genuine fear.

Mark said nothing.

And Rachel, still trembling on the floor near the staircase, kept the truth she had whispered hanging between them like a blade.
