Chapter 12 - Ethan and Lily Rebuilt the House Before They Rebuilt Any Relationship With Margaret

The recovery bedroom changed first.

Cleaning supplies disappeared from the upstairs floor.

Diane resumed her schedule.

Food and water came upstairs without Lily having to prove she needed:

them.

Then Lily made one request.

“Take the camera down.”

Ethan hesitated.

“It protected you.”

“It recorded me nursing, crying, sleeping and recovering in my own room.”

He understood.

The footage needed preservation while legal and family issues remained active.

So they did something in between.

The camera was physically covered after relevant recordings were securely copied to counsel.

Then removed completely once preservation was confirmed.

No replacement interior surveillance in private bedrooms.

Perimeter security remained.

Common areas had disclosed cameras where appropriate.

Privacy returned.

Then household authority.

Professional estate manager.

Clear staff reporting.

No family member could change schedules without Lily or Ethan approving.

Again:

boring.

Transformative.

Then Lily began counseling.

Not because Margaret had been right.

Because trauma and postpartum recovery could coexist without shame.

Some days Lily missed who she was before childbirth.

Some days she adored motherhood.

Some nights she hated everyone.

Some mornings Noah smiled and made the world feel manageable.

None of those emotions became a fitness test.

Then Ethan took six weeks away from most travel.

Not forever.

Long enough to learn the actual rhythm of their household instead of receiving summaries from:

his mother.

Diapers.

Feedings.

Laundry.

Doctor appointments.

No dramatic father transformation.

Work.

Then one night Noah screamed for forty-five minutes.

Lily sat on the floor and cried too.

Ethan sat beside:

her.

No one called her unstable.

No one photographed the room.

No one wrote a report.

Eventually Noah slept.

Lily laughed through tears.

“This is horrible.”

Ethan answered:

“Apparently people do it twice.”

“Idiots.”

Normal.

That was what Margaret’s system had almost taken from them.
