Chapter 14 - MARCUS TELLS THE TRUTH
Marcus eventually admitted he had enjoyed Sebastian’s exclusion. Not engineered.
Enjoyed. He became heir-apparent.
Board chair. Trusted nephew.
Eleanor praised him. Sebastian stayed outside.
Marcus told him: “I believed you were weak.” Sebastian answered: “I believed you stole my place.”
Both wrong partly. Then Marcus confessed he had seen Leonard’s 2019 correction summary once.
What? Not full letter.
A reference in board memo. He did not investigate.
Why? Because ambiguity benefited him. There. Not innocent.
Then Sebastian asked: “Did you know I was negative?” “I suspected.”
That hurt. Then Marcus voluntarily disclosed to trust counsel.
Could expose prior decisions. Good.
Then governance settlement included review of votes where conflict mattered. Most remained valid because outcomes supported independently.
No company chaos. Then Marcus stepped down as interim chair and stood for election under new board process.
Independent directors elected another chair. Marcus remained director.
Loss of status. He accepted.
Then he apologized to me too. “For what?”
“For letting Aunt Eleanor treat you like succession equipment because it kept questions away from me.” There.
Good. Then he asked to be Owen’s godfather? Too soon. No.
Then later, Sebastian chose Marcus as one of several family contacts, not godfather. Slow.
Then Vance Holdings performed well under shared governance. No need one heir.
That undermined Thomas Vance’s old obsession. Then court approved amendment mechanism? Trust modernization eventually.
Health clauses removed for future. Family council became advisory only.
No pregnancy files. No “heir” labels.
Then Sebastian placed the HEIR folder into legal archive. Not home.
Good. I asked if he wanted copy.
“No.” Neither did I.
Then one day Owen took first steps at Eleanor’s condo. Yes, condo—she had sold mansion after board exit because too much upkeep.
