Chapter 1 - THE ANNOUNCEMENT

I had rehearsed the sentence all week.

Not because I was afraid to say it.

Because after three years of fertility treatments, two miscarriages, and one surgery I had never told Daniel’s family about, I wanted the words to feel simple.

Happy.

Normal.

We were standing beneath a crystal chandelier in the ballroom of the Bellamy Grand Hotel, surrounded by white roses, champagne towers, and nearly two hundred people celebrating Vivian and Arthur Bellamy’s fortieth wedding anniversary.

Daniel stood beside me in a black tuxedo.

His hand rested at the small of my back.

I held a velvet box.

Inside was a silver baby spoon engraved with one word:

GRANDMA.

Vivian Bellamy smiled when I approached.

She wore a champagne-colored gown and diamonds that had belonged to her mother.

“Another gift?” she asked.

“Just a small one.”

I opened the box.

Then I said:

“I’m pregnant.”

The room seemed to inhale.

Daniel smiled so widely I almost laughed.

Then Vivian moved.

Fast.

Her expression changed from confusion to something I had never seen on her face before.

Fear.

She lunged toward me and kicked me hard in the stomach.

Pain exploded through my abdomen.

The velvet box flew from my hands.

The engraved spoon skittered across the marble floor.

I fell backward.

Daniel caught my shoulders before my head struck the stone.

Guests screamed.

Someone dropped a champagne glass.

Vivian stood above me breathing hard.

“There will never be your child in this family!”

Daniel looked up at his mother.

“What the hell is wrong with you?”

My hands moved immediately to my stomach.

I could not breathe properly.

“Daniel…”

He lifted me.

“Call an ambulance! NOW!”

People cleared a path.

He carried me toward the ballroom doors.

Then Vivian reached into her purse.

She pulled out a folded document.

“Take this with you.”

She threw it.

The paper landed across my lap.

Daniel kept moving.

I unfolded only the first section.

Then stopped breathing for a different reason.

The document was titled:

BELLAMY FAMILY SUCCESSION DECLARATION.

Underneath:

In the event Claire Bellamy gives birth to a biological child of Daniel Bellamy, all controlling trust rights assigned to Vivian Bellamy shall terminate immediately upon live birth.

I read the line twice.

Then another.

The newborn child would become the primary contingent beneficiary of Bellamy Hospitality Holdings.

Vivian’s control would end.

Not gradually.

Immediately.

Daniel stopped walking when he saw my face.

“What is it?”

I looked toward Vivian.

She was smiling.

Not because she was confident.

Because she thought the paper would frighten me.

Then she said:

“You should’ve asked what you were carrying before you brought it into my family.”

That was when I realized the kick was not only hatred.

It was panic.

And the paper in my hands suggested Vivian had spent years controlling a fortune that legally belonged to the next Bellamy generation.

A generation she had believed would never arrive.

The ambulance took me to St. Andrew Medical Center.

The baby survived.

So did I.

And before sunrise, my husband learned the first secret his mother had hidden from him since childhood:

May you like

His father had created a succession trust that automatically stripped Vivian of control the moment Daniel had a child.

What none of us understood yet was why Vivian had been so certain that would never happen.
