Chapter 1 - The Chair, The Slap, And The Darkness

Warm afternoon light spilled through the tall windows of the Hamptons estate glass dining pavilion, turning the pale stone floor almost gold. The long cream dining tables were set with flowers and polished glasses, and Emma sat quietly in her ivory party dress, her tiny silver tiara catching the light, looking much smaller than she should have in a room that grand.

Evelyn stood directly behind her granddaughter’s gold-framed chair, her face cold with the kind of anger that made everyone else in the family go quiet.

“STOP ACTING LIKE YOU BELONG IN THIS FAMILY!”

Only after the words left her mouth did she strike. She drove one hard front kick into the back of Emma’s chair. The chair jolted sharply backward across the stone floor, and Emma lost her balance and tumbled off it. She caught herself with her hands and did not hit her head, but she burst into tears instantly.

Claire rushed toward her daughter without thinking. She dropped to the floor beside Emma, pulled her upright into her arms, and held her tight. “EMMA! WHAT DID SHE DO TO YOU?”

Emma clung to her and cried into her shoulder. Claire wrapped both arms around her, turning her own body into a shield. Evelyn stood several feet away, glaring at them without a trace of remorse.

Then the wide double doors opened.

Richard Hayes stepped in from the main hall, followed at a distance by the two silent male aides who accompanied him almost everywhere these days. He took in the whole scene in a single glance: Claire kneeling on the floor with Emma in her arms, Evelyn standing over them, the chair knocked back from the table.

His expression hardened at once.

He crossed the pavilion quickly. Before he reached them, Evelyn moved first. She stepped toward Claire and Emma and reached one hand toward the child as if she meant to pull Emma away.

Richard caught her wrist before she could touch the girl.

“DON’T YOU TOUCH MY GRANDDAUGHTER AGAIN!”

Emma remained tucked behind Claire. Richard planted himself between Evelyn and the two of them, then let Evelyn’s wrist go only after he had fully blocked her path.

She tried to speak, tried to pull herself together, tried to recover the authority she thought she still had. She barely had the chance.

Richard stepped directly in front of her and slapped her hard across the face.

The sound cracked through the pavilion.

Evelyn stumbled sideways, lost her balance, and fell onto the pale stone floor. She landed safely on her side, stunned, staring up at him in disbelief. Richard did not strike her again. He did not even look away.

Instead, he reached inside the inner pocket of his dark navy suit jacket and pulled out a small black remote button.

Evelyn’s expression changed. Her anger gave way to confusion.

Then Richard pressed it once.

Every electric light in the pavilion shut off at the same time. Chandeliers and wall lights went dark, leaving only the thin gray daylight coming through the glass to illuminate the room. Emma’s crying softened to little shaking breaths against Claire’s chest.

Evelyn’s face turned pale.

Before she could rise, the two silent aides stepped in from opposite sides. One took her left arm. The other took her right. They pulled her upright and held her firmly, without twisting or hurting her, but with no room left for performance or escape.

Richard stood directly in front of her, the black remote still in his hand.

“NOW YOU’VE DESTROYED YOUR OWN LIFE.”

The confidence drained out of Evelyn’s face so fast it looked like fear had been living under her skin all along.

May you like

And for one suspended second in the darkened pavilion, no one spoke.
