Chapter 5 - The Nurse Margaret Thought They’d Forgotten

Elena Alvarez had taken care of William Mercer during the last four months of his life.

Margaret claimed she left for Florida right after the funeral.

That turned out to be another lie.

Thomas Bell met Sarah and David in the side sitting room rather than the library. His expression changed the moment he saw William’s note and the torn page from the hidden room.

“I knew your father was worried,” Thomas said. “I didn’t know he had started leaving breadcrumbs.”

“Do you know where Elena is?” Sarah asked.

Thomas nodded slowly. “I told Margaret I might need her signature on a final care affidavit. Margaret said Elena had already moved. I checked this morning because a line item in your father’s records didn’t make sense.”

“What line item?”

“A transfer. Fifty thousand dollars.”

David’s head snapped up. “From my father?”

Thomas nodded. “To Elena’s husband.”

Sarah frowned. “Why would William Mercer pay a nurse’s husband?”

Thomas looked at the torn page in his hand. “That depends on whether he paid him… or whether someone used his authority to do it.”

He called his office immediately. Ten minutes later, he had an address.

Elena had not moved to Florida. She was living in a small cottage thirty minutes inland, still in Virginia, and had refused to cash one final check the Mercer family office sent after William died.

Sarah wanted to go that second. David wanted to confront Margaret first. Thomas stopped them both.

“If Margaret knows what your father hid, and if Ryan was involved, confrontation without proof gives them time to coordinate.”

He was right.

They left Noah with the housemaid he trusted most, Mrs. Hanley, then drove to Elena’s cottage with Thomas following behind.

Elena answered the door herself.

The moment she saw David, she burst into tears.

“I told him this would happen,” she said before anyone asked a question. “I told Mr. Mercer she’d come after the boy next.”

Sarah stepped forward. “Why next?”

Elena let them inside.

Because William had found out what Ryan was doing.

That was the beginning.

During the last year of William’s life, Ryan had been quietly siphoning money from the marina renovation fund through shell contractors. Not enough to trigger an immediate audit, but enough that William noticed irregularities. When he confronted Ryan privately, Margaret intervened. She begged William not to ruin their son. She promised Ryan would fix it.

He didn’t.

Instead, Margaret tried to isolate William from anyone who might support changing the will.

That was where Sarah and Noah came in.

“Mr. Mercer adored that child,” Elena said. “And he trusted Sarah. Your mother hated that. She said if the boy stayed close to your father, he’d poison him against the rest of the family.”

David sat very still.

Elena then said the words that reshaped everything.

“The blue ledger contained Ryan’s fake contractors, your father’s notes, and a codicil to the will. Your father signed it three days before he died.”

Thomas leaned forward. “What did the codicil do?”

Elena looked at Sarah.

“It protected Noah.”
