Chapter 13 - Margaret Was Allowed Back Only After Lily Asked

Nearly two years passed before Lily said:
“I think I want to see Grandma.”
Sarah did not answer immediately.
David asked:
“Why?”
“I miss her.”
That mattered.
Not pressure.
Not family guilt.
Not a holiday.
Lily wanted:
contact.
They arranged lunch in a neutral restaurant.
Margaret arrived early.
No gifts.
No family paperwork.
No unsolicited advice.
Lily walked in beside Sarah.
Margaret stood.
Then stopped herself before reaching for a hug.
“Hi, Lily.”
“Hi.”
They sat.
For ten minutes they discussed school.
Then Lily asked directly:
“Why did you slap me?”
Margaret’s hands tightened around her napkin.
Sarah watched.
David watched.
Margaret answered:
“Because you cried and I was angry that you weren’t obeying me.”
“Was I holding Noah wrong?”
“No.”
“Was he unsafe?”
“No.”
“Then why did you keep saying I was useless?”
Margaret looked ashamed.
“Because I wanted you to feel small enough that you would do what I said.”
Sarah felt David shift beside her.
No one interrupted.
Then Lily asked:
“Why did you say Mom was next?”
Margaret did not hide behind the document.
“I wanted your mother to sign papers giving me more authority in the family, and I thought frightening both of you would make her easier to pressure.”
There.
The truth.
Then Lily asked:
“Do you still think Mom can’t handle us?”
“No.”
“Did you ever?”
Margaret thought.
“I convinced myself I did.”
That distinction was honest.
Then:
“Why?”
“Because I wanted to be needed.”
Lily frowned.
“You could have just visited.”
Sarah almost laughed.
Margaret did.
A small, sad laugh.
“Yes.”
Then Lily asked the question that determined what happened next.
“Can I hug you?”
Margaret’s eyes filled.
“If you want.”
Lily stood and hugged her briefly.
That did not erase:
anything.
It simply became one new memory beside the old one.
Then Margaret looked at Sarah.
Sarah shook her head slightly.
Not yet.
Margaret accepted:
it.
May you like
That was progress too.
