Chapter 9 - THE VERDICT
Victor’s trial lasted eight weeks.
Guests from the restaurant testified.
The waiter repeated the command.
The surgeon described the hand on Emily’s neck.
Security explained the preserved footage.
Marcus Cole described years of deleted incidents.
Dr. Bell admitted accepting payments for false medical reports.
Lorraine refused to testify against Victor.
The prosecution introduced her emails.
Force her.
The jury watched footage of Victor practicing the confrontation with Lorraine earlier that day.
They sat at the same table before the restaurant opened.
Lorraine instructed him:
“Make her look unstable. Do not leave marks.”
Victor asked:
“What if Margaret interferes?”
Lorraine smiled.
“She never does.”
The sentence broke something in the room.
Margaret closed her eyes.
Emily did not.
Victor was convicted on all major charges.
He received twenty-three years.
Lorraine accepted a plea after the verdict.
She received fifteen years and forfeited assets connected to the stolen trust.
Dr. Bell went to prison and lost his license.
Marcus Cole received a reduced sentence for cooperation.
At sentencing, Victor spoke directly to Emily.
“You wanted everyone to see me as a monster.”
Emily stood.
“No. I wanted everyone to see what you did.”
He shook his head.
“You destroyed us.”
“There was no us. There was you, and everything you controlled.”
Lorraine cried during her own sentencing.
Not for Emily.
For Victor.
Margaret watched her sister grieve the consequences she had taught her son to ignore.
The judge ordered restitution.
Emily used most of it to establish independent legal clinics for guardianship abuse.
The clinic model was simple.
No family referrals.
No hidden doctors.
No private hearings without independent counsel.
No person could be declared incapable based only on reports paid for by someone seeking control.
The first clinic opened one year later.
It was named after Daniel Moore.
