Chapter 12 - Patricia Said She Was Afraid Lily Would Grow Up Knowing Her as a Problem
The conversation happened at a quiet café.
No Lily.
No Daniel.
Emily insisted.
Patricia arrived early.
Of course.
For several minutes they discussed:
coffee,
weather.
Then Emily:
“Why the photograph?”
Patricia looked down.
“Michael.”
Emily knew.
“More than that.”
Patricia took time.
“When Claire had Mia, she kept me away for weeks.”
Emily stayed quiet.
Patricia continued.
“Claire told everyone I overstep.”
“Some relatives started treating me like I was dangerous to new mothers.”
Emily almost said:
because you overstepped.
Stopped.
Let her finish.
Then Emily became pregnant.
Patricia felt:
second chance.
Emily called:
for advice,
forms,
planning.
Patricia interpreted:
I am trusted.
Then hospital photograph cancellation.
Patricia heard:
You are becoming Claire too.
Then the fear beneath:
“If I wasn't part of Lily’s first days, I thought I would slowly become the grandmother everyone manages.”
Emily stared.
“You were afraid of being managed.”
“Yes.”
“So you managed everyone else.”
Patricia gave a sad laugh.
“Yes.”
Then:
“I wanted proof I belonged.”
“The photograph.”
“Yes.”
Then Emily asked:
“Why did I have to lie?”
Patricia’s eyes filled.
“That was panic.”
“You threatened me.”
“Yes.”
“You wanted me documented as the mother who dropped her newborn.”
Patricia covered her mouth.
When phrased plainly:
horrible.
Then:
“I know.”
Emily continued:
“You were willing to put that in my medical record.”
“I didn't think that far.”
“That is the problem.”
Patricia nodded.
Then:
“You believed your fear mattered more than my future.”
“Yes.”
No defense.
Then Patricia asked:
“Do you think I wanted to take Lily?”
Emily answered:
“No.”
Patricia looked relieved.
Emily continued:
“I think you wanted to prove nobody could stop you from being included.”
That was closer.
Then:
“And I think you loved Lily.”
Patricia cried.
Both.
Then Emily owned hers.
“I used you.”
Patricia looked surprised.
“I made you tell people no because I didn't want to.”
“I let you be harsher than I would have been.”
“I ignored what you did to Claire because it made my life easier.”
Then:
“I chose you as gatekeeper because Daniel was weak instead of demanding he become stronger.”
Patricia whispered:
“He is not weak.”
Emily looked at her.
Patricia corrected:
“He was.”
Then laughed faintly.
Growth.
Then Emily said:
“I also let you think helping bought access.”
“Not intentionally.”
“But I accepted the help and avoided correcting the expectation early.”
Patricia nodded.
Then:
“What do you want from me now?”
Emily answered:
“Nothing transactional.”
Patricia frowned.
Emily explained:
“If you offer to babysit and I say no, it cannot become evidence I reject you.”
“If you buy Lily something, it doesn’t buy a holiday.”
“If you help us, you don't get a vote.”
“If you disagree, tell me.”
“Do not interpret.”
Then Patricia:
“Can I still be important?”
Emily softened.
“Yes.”
Then:
“But importance isn't authority.”
There.
Then Patricia asked:
“Will you ever trust me alone with her?”
Emily did not answer quickly.
“I don't know.”
Patricia looked hurt.
Emily continued:
“That's the truth.”
No promise.
Then:
“You don't get a deadline for trust.”
Patricia nodded.
Hard.
Then her own boundary.
Patricia said:
“I need you not to call me controlling every time I have an opinion.”
Emily considered.
“Fair.”
Then:
“An opinion is not control.”
“Acting after I say no is.”
Patricia nodded.
Good distinction.
Then Daniel joined later for one session.
Patricia apologized to him too.
Why?
She used his conflict avoidance.
She knew:
if she pushed softly enough,
Daniel often would not say no clearly.
She took advantage.
Daniel said:
“I let you.”
Both.
Then Michael’s photograph.
Patricia brought it.
The old three-generation picture.
She offered Emily.
“I don't want it.”
Patricia smiled sadly.
“I know.”
Then:
“Can I keep it?”
“Of course.”
No need destroy symbol.
Patricia later took her own private photograph:
herself holding Lily
months later,
with Emily’s permission.
No Michael staging.
No hidden photographer.
One grandmother.
One baby.
