Chapter 4 - THE LOCK

Adrian stood before I reached the table.

“What did you do?”

“Filed a dispute.”

“Against what?”

“You tell me.”

Guests nearby began noticing.

Vanessa leaned toward him. “Not here.”

Celeste ignored her. “You have no idea what you just stopped.”

“I know exactly what I stopped.”

That was partly bluff.

Martin Hale approached. “Adrian. Board counsel needs you upstairs.”

Adrian did not move.

“Now.”

The transaction lock did not accuse anyone of fraud. It did something more useful: it stopped irreversible action while facts were checked.

Adrian left with Martin. Vanessa followed.

Celeste remained.

“You think business is about paperwork,” she said.

“It often is.”

“No. It’s about timing.”

“Did you sign anything in my name?”

“No.”

“Did Adrian?”

“No.”

“Did Vanessa?”

Vanessa was gone, so Celeste answered for no one.

Then I asked, “Did you know about Coastal Land?”

Her eyes flicked.

That was enough.

“Who told you that?”

Not denial.

Then she realized.

“Adrian understands that hesitation kills companies.”

“And that gives him the right to speak for me?”

“It gives him the responsibility to act.”

There it was again: action used as substitute for permission.

At 10:55, Maya arrived at the hotel lobby. Martin joined us on a secure call with outside board counsel.

The emergency committee had frozen the Meridian Coastal closing, the asset sale to Coastal Land, and all changes to voting authority.

Not the whole company.

Good.

Martin showed us portal logs. The proxy had been uploaded from Adrian’s executive account at 7:12 p.m. My signature image came from an old board-consent file retrieved by Adrian’s executive assistant, Melissa Grant.

We called Melissa.

She cried immediately.

“Adrian asked me to send an old signature page for formatting. I did. I never attached it to a new proxy.”

Then my phone buzzed.

Anonymous number.

YOU HAVE HALF THE STORY.

Another:

DANIEL DIDN’T LEAVE BECAUSE OF THE PROXY.

HE LEFT BECAUSE OF THE MONEY HE TOOK.

Attached was a bank transfer.

$480,000 from Vale Meridian to Ruiz Advisory LLC.

Three days before Daniel disappeared.

Description: Severance Consulting.

Martin stared. “I never approved that.”

Who had?

Adrian.

Now Daniel’s position looked different again.

Whistleblower.

Participant.

Possible recipient of hush money.

Maybe all three.

Hotel security found Daniel sitting in the parking garage.

Not fleeing.

Waiting.

He told Maya, “I knew you’d come.”

May you like

Then he looked at me.

“Ask Evelyn if she wants the rest.”
