Chapter 7 - REBUILDING WITH EVIDENCE

Years passed.

Victoria wrote letters from prison.

Most went unread.

One arrived addressed to Daniel.

He brought it to Claire unopened.

“You don’t need my permission,” she said.

“I know.”

“Do you want to read it?”

“No.”

“Then why bring it?”

“Because secrets helped her.”

Claire nodded.

They burned it in the kitchen sink, which Denise later called “legally unsophisticated but emotionally appropriate.”

Victoria’s social circle shrank to the sort of people who believed consequences were vulgar.

Her name came off buildings.

Caldwell Civic Ventures dissolved.

The stolen disability housing funds were restored partly through restitution, partly through settlements, partly through Daniel selling Caldwell assets he once believed were family legacy.

He did not ask Claire whether that made him noble.

Good.

It did not.

It made him late.

Late can still repair roofs.

The restored funds completed seventeen accessible apartments in Chicago within four years.

Claire attended the opening of the first building.

She rolled through the front entrance beside Denise, Marcus, Miriam, Daniel, and several former residents who had been waiting years.

A woman named Althea, who used a walker after a stroke, touched the new ramp rail and said, “About time.”

Claire smiled.

“Yes.”

Althea looked at her.

“You the lady who got hit?”

Claire blinked.

Daniel stiffened.

Claire said, “One of them.”

Althea nodded.

“Good. Hit back with paperwork.”

May you like

Miriam whispered, “I adore her.”

Claire did too.
