Chapter 13 - Elena Had To Rebuild Without Michael
The financial conflict was dramatic to everyone outside Elena’s body.
Inside her life, it was not the hardest part.
The hardest part remained waking every morning without Michael.
Physical therapy hurt.
Parenting twins from a wheelchair exhausted her.
Legal documents could be signed.
Cards could be canceled.
Property could be managed.
Grief could not be administratively resolved.
There were nights Elena still reached across the bed before fully waking.
Mornings when Leo made a face identical to Michael’s and she had to leave the room.
Days when Maya grabbed one of Michael’s old shirts and Elena sat on the floor crying until the nanny quietly took both babies outside.
Her mother’s betrayal arrived during the worst possible season.
That made it tempting to define the recovery through vengeance.
Elena resisted.
She returned gradually to Morgan Pediatric Systems through video meetings, then part-time office hours once she could walk short distances with crutches.
Her co-founder, Rebecca Stein, had protected the company during the crash aftermath without turning Elena into a ceremonial figurehead.
“No heroic return,” Rebecca told her. “Come back when your brain and body are actually ready.”
Elena listened.
The brace eventually came off.
Then came a cane.
Then, months later, short unsupported steps.
Leo learned to walk during the same period.
The first time he crossed the living-room carpet on his own, Elena cried so hard he started crying too.
Maya joined them because one-year-olds consider tears contagious.
The nanny filmed the whole ridiculous scene.
Elena kept that video.
Not the one from the home security camera showing Diane’s incident.
That recording existed for legal documentation and remained with counsel.
But Elena refused to watch it again.
She did not want Leo’s childhood archived primarily through the worst thing a grandmother did to him.
He had fallen onto carpet.
Cried.
Been held.
Recovered.
His life was larger than those seconds.
