Chapter 2 - What Lucas believed would happen if he told

Lucas went to the hospital even though he appeared physically unharmed.
Rachel insisted.
Daniel agreed immediately.
Doctors found no respiratory problem, no significant injury, and no evidence that Lucas had inhaled enough water to create an immediate concern. They still kept him under observation for several hours because children could develop symptoms after a frightening water incident.
Lucas barely spoke at first.
He remained wrapped in a hospital blanket, sitting against Rachel with his fingers twisted around hers.
Daniel stayed a few feet away.
He had already given a statement about what happened.
Including the slap.
“I hit my mother after Lucas was already safe with Rachel,” he said.
The officer asked whether Judith had been attacking anyone at that moment.
“No.”
“Then the strike wasn’t necessary to stop an immediate threat?”
Daniel swallowed.
“No.”
That was difficult to admit while his son was still trembling from something Judith had done.
It was still true.
Daniel had confronted his mother.
Then he retaliated.
He would deal with that separately.
What mattered now was Lucas.
A pediatric social worker eventually asked whether Lucas wanted to speak with his parents alone.
He nodded.
When the room emptied, Daniel pulled a chair closer.
“You didn’t do anything wrong.”
Lucas stared at his blanket.
“I made Grandma mad.”
“That doesn’t make what she did okay.”
“She said I was ruining everything.”
Rachel looked at Daniel.
“When?”
Lucas shrugged.
“A lot.”
Daniel leaned forward.
“What did she mean?”
Lucas’s lower lip started trembling.
“She says Mom brought me into your family and you only pretend I’m your son because you feel bad for us.”
Daniel’s face changed.
Rachel shut her eyes.
“Lucas…”
“She said when you have a real kid, I’m going somewhere else.”
Daniel went completely still.
“What real kid?”
“One that’s yours.”
The words came out quietly.
Lucas still did not look at him.
Daniel understood exactly what Judith meant.
Biological.
Lucas continued.
“She said you’d be happier if it was just you and Mom and your real baby.”
Rachel wrapped both arms around him.
“Grandma was lying.”
Lucas looked at Daniel.
Not Rachel.
That hurt.
“Was she?”
Daniel moved his chair directly in front of him.
“Yes.”
“You’re not my birth dad.”
“No.”
That had never been hidden from Lucas.
“But I am your father.”
Lucas’s eyes filled.
“Grandma says that’s different.”
“It is different.”
Lucas flinched.
Daniel immediately continued.
“Different does not mean less.”
The boy stared at him.
Daniel took a breath.
“I did not become your father by accident. I chose it. I went to court. I signed papers. I promised to raise you. I wanted you to be my son.”
Lucas whispered, “Even if you never have another kid?”
“Even if I have ten.”
Rachel shot him a look.
“Hypothetically.”
For the first time all afternoon, Lucas almost smiled.
Then the smile disappeared.
“What if Grandma tells you I’m bad?”
Daniel felt something cold move through him.
“Has she done that?”
Lucas nodded.
And suddenly the family had another question to answer.
Not why Judith lost control beside the pool.
May you like
How long she had been preparing Lucas to believe Daniel might stop loving him.
