Chapter 9 - Diane Tried to Replace the Money Before She Repaired the Relationship

Mom’s first response to the reserve ending was not apology.

It was:

fundraising.

She met with her financial adviser.

Asked about:

selling investments.

Taking a home-equity line on her condo.

Reducing withdrawals.

Then she called Ryan.

“I can help you.”

Of course.

The system was trying to reproduce itself with a new provider.

Ryan, to his credit, said no.

That surprised me.

Mom called me angry.

“Now he’s too proud to take help.”

I said:

“Maybe he wants to learn what his household costs.”

“That sounds like you.”

“Good.”

Mom disliked that.

She then offered to repay:

me.

That surprised me more.

“How much?”

“All of it.”

I almost laughed.

“Mom.”

“I don’t want your money.”

“You’ve already used it.”

“I’ll sell the condo if I have to.”

There.

Money as:

shame.

Exactly what I had been trying to prevent for six years.

I said:

“I gave you most of it.”

“You didn’t tell me.”

“That doesn’t make the gift fake.”

“Then why show everyone the numbers?”

Good question.

“At first, because I was angry.”

There.

Truth.

I had scheduled:

the Monday meeting

before Mother’s Day.

But after the slap, part of me wanted:

impact.

I wanted Mom to see:

You called me selfish while living partly on my money.

I wanted Ryan to see:

You grabbed my wrist while my money was still supporting your household.

That desire was understandable.

It was also:

punitive.

The meeting remained necessary.

My emotional satisfaction in it was something else.

I told Mom:

“I’m not asking for old gifts back.”

“Then what do you want?”

“New boundaries.”

“I don’t know what that means.”

“It means if you need help, ask me.”

“I decide whether I can and want to help.”

“Not Ryan.”

“Not you.”

“Not Dad’s memory.”

Mom became quiet.

Then:

“What if you say no?”

“That is allowed.”

She started crying.

And for the first time, I understood:

No

did not sound to Diane like:

not this expense.

It sounded like:

not you.

We had work to do that no bank statement could solve.

But before any of us got there, I had to confront the part of the old system that belonged almost entirely to me.

May you like

The part I had been avoiding by focusing on everyone else’s entitlement.
