Chapter 8 - WHAT FRANKLIN TOOK WITH HIM

Franklin Calder had been buried in a private mausoleum north of Phoenix.
Lorraine owned the land.
She had always refused to let Travis visit alone.
By noon, police obtained a warrant.
The blood on the key belonged to Evelyn Shaw.
The key opened a small compartment beneath Franklin’s crypt.
Inside were three items.
A ledger.
A cassette tape.
And a sealed letter addressed to TRAVIS AND ELIAS.
Reed documented everything.
The cassette was played at the station.
Franklin’s voice emerged through static.
“If this is being heard, Lorraine has either betrayed me or outlived my ability to stop her.”
Travis sat beside Evan.
Neither looked at the other.
Franklin confessed that he had paid Dr. Vale to falsify Elias’s death and arranged for the adoption because Lorraine demanded a new life.
But the deeper truth was worse.
Lorraine had not merely accepted the arrangement.
She had proposed it.
Franklin wanted one son.
Lorraine selected Travis because he was healthy.
Owen had been told Elias died.
Evelyn had been paid to disappear.
Franklin then admitted he later discovered Elias survived and became Evan Shaw.
He amended the trust out of guilt.
“I knew both boys were mine only in law,” the recording said, “but both were victims of our ambition.”
Evan’s face remained stone.
Travis’s eyes filled.
Then Franklin revealed one final fact.
Lorraine had been blackmailing him for years with evidence of bribery and fraud.
The family fortune was built partly on illegal land deals.
The ledger listed judges, inspectors, contractors, and elected officials.
Reed stopped the recording.
“This is bigger than a family case.”
The investigation expanded immediately.
Federal agents arrived.
Bank accounts were frozen.
Lorraine disappeared.
Her attorney claimed he did not know where she was.
Wren withdrew from representation by evening.
Meanwhile, Brooke’s toxicology results returned.
The replacement prescription contained benzodiazepines in a dosage high enough to impair consciousness.
Dr. Vale was charged.
He offered cooperation in exchange for leniency.
He gave police the location of Lorraine’s emergency apartment in Scottsdale.
It was empty.
On the wall was a surveillance board.
Photographs of Brooke.
Travis.
Jonah.
Evan.
Owen.
Evelyn.
Timelines.
Medical records.
Bank transfers.
Lorraine had not been reacting.
She had been planning for months.
Reed found a burned photograph in the kitchen sink.
It showed Lorraine beside a young woman.
On the back was a name.
Claire Mercer.
Owen recognized it immediately.
“My sister.”
Travis turned.
“You never mentioned a sister.”
“She died in 1992.”
“How?”
“Car accident.”
Reed looked at him.
“Was Lorraine with her?”
Owen’s face changed.
He sat down.
Claire had been the only person who knew both twins survived the birth.
She tried to help Owen locate Travis after Lorraine disappeared.
Then she died.
Reed asked, “Who identified the body?”
Owen whispered, “Dr. Vale.”
The room fell silent.
A federal agent entered carrying a recovered laptop from Lorraine’s apartment.
They had broken the password.
Inside was a folder labeled CLAIRE.
The folder contained recent photographs.
A woman in her late fifties leaving a grocery store.
Entering a church.
Standing outside the Calder mansion two months earlier.
Claire was alive.
Owen stared at the screen.
“That is impossible.”
The agent opened another file.
A video.
Lorraine sat across from Claire in a dim room.
Lorraine said, “You have stayed dead for thirty-four years. Stay dead a little longer.”
Claire replied, “Not after what you did to Brooke.”
The video ended.
Brooke looked at Reed.
“Claire sent the bracelet.”
Reed nodded.
“She may also have planted the recorder.”
Travis turned toward the screen.
“Where is she?”
The agent checked the metadata.
“The last video was recorded yesterday.”
“Where?”
The coordinates appeared.
A storage facility outside Mesa.
Police raided it before sunset.
They found Claire alive, locked in a converted office.
She was dehydrated but conscious.
When Owen saw her, he fell to his knees.
Claire held his face and cried.
Then she looked at Travis and Evan.
“You both have her eyes,” she whispered.
Evan asked the question no one else could.
“Why did you pretend to be dead?”
Claire’s expression changed.
“Because Lorraine tried to kill me.”
Reed stepped closer.
“When?”
“Thirty-four years ago.”
“And now?”
Claire looked toward the open storage door.
“She came back yesterday.”
“Why?”
Claire’s voice dropped.
“To trade me for Jonah.”
At that exact moment, Brooke’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered on speaker.
Lorraine’s voice said, “Bring Elias to the old Calder development outside Flagstaff.”
Evan went still.
“Why me?” he asked.
“Because you are the only thing I have left that Travis might trade his son for.”
Then a baby cried in the background.
Brooke looked down.
Jonah was not in her arms.
The nursery nurse had taken him for an examination twenty minutes earlier.
May you like
Brooke ran.
The hospital bassinet was empty.
