Chapter 11 - THE FIRST VISIT

Diane came home after custody with gray in her hair I had never noticed before. She asked for contact through therapist. I said no. Three months later, still no. Then Ethan asked: “Does Grandma ask about me?” “Yes.” “Does she know I’m okay?” “Yes.” Then: “Do you want to see her?” He thought. “No.” Good. Six months later: “Maybe.” We arranged supervised visit. Neutral office. Diane entered slowly. No gifts. No phone. No clipboard. She sat across from Ethan. “Hi.” He stared. Then: “Why did you take Mom’s phone?” Direct. Diane swallowed. “Because I was scared police would get involved.” “Why?” “Because Ryan pushed you.” Then: “You cared more about Ryan?” Diane cried. “I acted like I did.” Good answer. Then: “Did you want me to live with you?” “Yes.” “Why?” “I thought your mom worked too much and I could give you more stability.” Ethan frowned. “She is stable.” Diane nodded. “I know that now.” Then: “Did you lie?” “Yes.” “About Mom?” “Yes.” Then: “Why?” “Because she said no to me.” Silence. Then Ethan said: “That’s bad.” “Yes.” Then: “Can I hug you?” Diane asked. He thought. “No.” She nodded. “Okay.” There. The no. No guilt. No: But I’m Grandma. No crying into him. Just okay. Then on drive home Ethan said: “She looked old.” “Yes.” “Is that because jail?” “Maybe partly.” Then: “Do I have to forgive?” “No.” Then: “Can I?” “Yes.” His. Then another visit. Then another. Eventually a hug. Not planned. After Diane helped him with a crossword and he got up to leave, he hugged her quickly. She froze. Then let go when he did. Trust at current size. Then Diane asked me privately: “Do you forgive me?” I answered: “Some things.” She nodded. Then: “Which?” “For not making Ethan comfort you.” She cried. Then stopped herself. Good.

The first supervised visit ended quietly, but Diane left one sentence with the therapist that stopped me cold: “Rachel still doesn’t know who gave me the medical records.”
