Chapter 12 - Megan Chose to Leave Before the Deadline

Megan moved three months early.

Not because:

Gordon pressured her.

Because she found:

a townhouse.

Three bedrooms.

Small fenced yard.

Ten minutes from the children’s school.

Less romantic than Arden Court.

More practical.

Purchase price:

$318,000.

Megan had:

savings.

Her corrected LLC distributions helped.

So did:

her own income.

Tom did not buy the house.

Ryan did not.

Gordon certainly did not.

Megan qualified:

herself.

That mattered to her.

Then she caught herself.

Qualifying alone did not make the home:

morally superior.

She had spent five years benefiting from:

Margot’s housing plan.

That help had given her time to:

recover from divorce,

build savings,

stabilize children.

She did not need to turn independence into:

denial of support.

At closing she said:

“Grandma helped me get here.”

Ryan smiled.

“Careful. That sounds emotionally healthy.”

“Shut up.”

Lily chose:

the upstairs bedroom with the slanted ceiling.

Ben chose:

the room nearest the bathroom.

The stuffed rabbit moved too.

No hidden charm.

The night before leaving Arden Court, Megan walked through Unit 3C alone.

She expected:

grief.

Felt:

gratitude.

This had never needed to be:

forever

to matter.

She touched the kitchen doorway where Lily’s height marks remained on a removable wooden strip.

She took the strip.

Not the wall.

Then she went downstairs.

The Moon Box had been returned to:

organized archival storage.

The silver charm was no longer attached.

Megan held it once.

Then put it in:

Margot’s music-box tray.

Visible.

No secret.

She wound the key.

The old mechanical lullaby played.

This time nobody was hiding in the basement.

Nobody was afraid.

May you like

When the tune ended, Megan closed the lid and went upstairs.
