Chapter 6 - VICTORIA'S VERSION
Victoria’s defense was aggressive. She said Claire had always played victim, hidden her wealthy background, and allowed Noah to become too sensitive. She called the cake incident a terrible joke taken too far. Several guests contradicted her, saying she had mocked Noah repeatedly before touching the cake. Victoria’s lawyers later emphasized that Claire had also insulted Victoria in private messages. That was true. The dispute became stronger when nobody pretended Claire had been perfectly calm or Victoria had been cruel every second of her life.
The business conflict became easier once both boards separated personal retaliation from corporate judgment. Financing, ownership, and governance were evaluated independently.
The party became less important over time. What lasted was Noah’s question: does nobody like me? Every adult had to answer that through behavior, not money.
Claire learned that wealth can distort a family even when nobody steals anything. People start treating surnames, schools, houses, invitations, and introductions like evidence of worth. She wanted Noah to understand those things were resources, not identity.
Richard repeatedly offered to fix situations until Claire told him that fixing had always been his problem. He learned to ask first.
Rebecca Sloan insisted on precise language. Richard was not a magical rescuer. Victoria was not suddenly powerless. Noah was not an heir to be displayed. Accuracy made manipulation harder.
Noah’s two friends mattered because the entire conflict began with adults treating popularity like value. Two genuine friendships were worth more than a yard full of people attending because of a surname.
Victoria’s insecurity explained some of her cruelty without excusing it. She had spent years comparing families, houses, schools, and social circles until every difference felt like a ranking.
Noah’s confidence returned in small steps: inviting one friend over, choosing his own cake the next year, and eventually laughing about dinosaur frosting.
Richard’s challenge was learning not to solve everything with influence. Claire repeatedly asked him to wait, listen, and let ordinary institutions do their jobs.
