Chapter 4 - PIER 17

The first rescue led to a second trap, and the man we saved warned us that Rebecca herself had helped build the coffin plan.

I did not go alone.

Former-agent instinct wanted speed.

Experience demanded backup.

Federal task force took lead.

Pier 17 belonged to an abandoned Hale Meridian cold-storage property near Baltimore harbor.

No active lease.

No registered employees.

Still powered.

Why?

Corporate holding costs.

Then thermal scan.

One person inside.

Maybe more.

Team entered.

No Richard.

No Rebecca.

Only a man tied to a chair.

Hale Meridian security director, Paul Kern.

The missing officer who signed coffin transfer.

Alive.

Beaten.

He said Richard did not order Michael into coffin.

That stopped everyone.

Who did?

“Rebecca.”

I stared.

No.

Paul insisted.

Rebecca had approached him with Michael.

They planned to fake Michael’s disappearance to force Richard into panic.

The coffin?

Not supposed to be buried.

It was supposed to be discovered before ceremony.

A staged exposure.

Why?

Because Michael wanted federal agents to catch Richard moving illicit records during funeral chaos.

That sounded reckless.

Then what went wrong?

Paul said another team intercepted them.

Men connected to Richard’s private security chief.

Michael drugged for real.

Rebecca escaped.

Paul captured.

Then Richard discovered coffin plan afterward and decided to use it.

He left Michael inside.

That made him complicit even if not origin.

Then Paul’s story.

Did he help Rebecca fake the burned vehicle too?

Yes.

Controlled blood sample.

Purse.

Phone clone.

Fire.

Why would Rebecca fake death?

To force Hale Meridian insiders to move.

A dead spouse cannot be surveilled.

Again.

Reckless.

Illegal potential.

But not murder.

Then Rebecca.

Where now?

Paul did not know.

She took ledger.

Then Pier 17 text.

Who sent?

Paul’s phone.

But he was tied.

Someone else used.

Maybe Rebecca.

Then task force searched property.

One hidden office.

Fresh footprints.

Laptop.

Open map.

Marked location:

St. Agnes Cemetery.

Margaret’s grave.

Why?

The ledger perhaps never in safe-deposit box permanently.

Maybe Rebecca planned to return it to Margaret.

Then grave records.

Recent maintenance request scheduled next morning.

From a shell company linked to Richard.

Everyone moved.

At cemetery, no Rebecca.

But ground near Margaret’s grave disturbed.

Inside a waterproof tube beneath headstone:

not ledger.

USB.

Video.

Rebecca speaking directly to camera.

Alive.

Bruised.

Recorded eighteen hours earlier.

“Emma, if you’re seeing this, Richard knows about the ledger. Michael is alive if the coffin plan worked. If it didn’t, I’m sorry.”

I felt sick.

Then:

“Do not trust Paul completely.”

Paul.

The man we just rescued.

Then:

“He was feeding Richard information while pretending to help us.”

Task force turned back toward Pier 17.

Too late.

Paul was gone.

He had escaped custody during transfer? Better unrealistic. Let's say he was transported and vanished due accomplice attack? Hmm.

Instead, investigators had left him guarded. They called.

Guard said Paul collapsed.

Medical transport underway.

Then ambulance rerouted.

Stolen.

Paul escaped.

There.

The conspiracy widened.

Then Rebecca’s video continued.

“The ledger is not paper anymore. Margaret copied it twice.”

Where was second?

“At Richard’s house.”

No.

Too obvious.

Then:

“Inside something he touches every day.”

What?

Wedding ring?

Maybe.

Gold ring.

The identical ring.

Suddenly I understood.

Margaret’s ring had micro-engraving? Could hide data? Too cinematic. Better inside ring box? Hmm.

“Something he touches every day” could be desk globe, watch safe. But key object wedding ring should matter.

Maybe ring contained tiny storage chip embedded years later? Implausible.

Alternative: ring inscription is cipher key to ledger encryption. Excellent.

The gold ring was not storage.

It was password.

R + M plus wedding date engraved inside.

Encryption key.

That was why Richard panicked when he saw ring on Michael’s hand at funeral.

If investigators got ring, they could decode USB.

Paul’s story about Rebecca arranging the original coffin plan was verified through messages on a burner phone. She had indeed intended Michael to be discovered before the ceremony.

That did not make the plan safe.

A closed coffin is still a confined space.

Sedation can still go wrong.

Transport can still change.

The fact that Richard later turned the plan into something more dangerous did not erase the recklessness that came first.

Rebecca eventually admitted that without argument.
