Chapter 5 - Daniel Had Already Asked Emily Why Grace Made Her So Angry
Daniel loved Emily.
That was why the wedding-day humiliation disturbed him so deeply.
It was not because he learned:
Emily had a secret.
Everyone has secrets.
It was because he had already watched her become someone different around Grace.
Examples.
At Thanksgiving, Grace mentioned an accessibility project in Atlanta.
Emily said:
“Must be nice having your tragedy turn into a career.”
Grace went quiet.
Emily later apologized.
Daniel asked:
“Why say it?”
Emily answered:
“Because everyone treats her like she invented resilience.”
Another time Margaret praised Grace for:
“never complaining.”
Emily laughed.
“Yeah, because the rest of us do enough for her.”
Again:
apology.
Again:
resentment.
Daniel began asking:
“What happened between you?”
Emily always said:
“The fire.”
He thought she meant:
trauma.
She meant:
everything after.
Then wedding planning.
Daniel suggested Grace do a reading.
Emily said no.
“Why?”
“She’ll make the ceremony about her.”
Grace had never asked.
Then Emily insisted:
Grace sit on aisle but not directly beside bridal party.
Daniel pushed back.
Eventually:
front pew.
Then photographs.
Daniel discovered the photographer note:
Limit close-up family images featuring visible scar contrast.
He confronted Emily.
She claimed:
photographer phrased badly.
The photographer later denied originating it.
Daniel asked Emily:
“Did you say that?”
Emily cried.
Said she wanted:
one day without people seeing her as the sister from the fire.
Daniel understood that wish.
He did not understand:
making Grace hide.
He said:
“You can have a day about you without making her disappear.”
Emily promised.
Then church.
She broke the promise.
That was why Daniel asked to postpone.
Not cancel.
He told the priest:
“I cannot make vows while I’m trying to decide whether I know the person standing beside me.”
Emily was devastated.
“You’re doing this because of Grace.”
Daniel answered:
“No.”
Then:
“I’m doing this because of what you just did to Grace.”
Important.
The rabbit had opened history.
The cruelty delayed the wedding.
Different issues.
Then guests.
Margaret wanted:
send everyone home.
Emily wanted:
ceremony proceed.
Daniel said no.
They announced:
The ceremony is postponed due to a family matter.
No public explanation.
No humiliation announcement.
Some guests speculated.
Fine.
Then Emily blamed Margaret.
“You did that on purpose.”
Margaret answered:
“Yes.”
Grace looked at her.
Margaret had intentionally brought Clover.
Why?
Because Emily had told Margaret the night before:
“If Grace’s scars dominate my wedding photos, I’ll move her.”
Margaret warned:
“Don’t.”
Emily assumed Margaret would eventually defend her bride.
Margaret instead brought the rabbit.
Was that healthy?
No.
Margaret chose:
public confrontation at wedding
instead of:
private truth earlier.
Again:
drama as control.
Then Grace said:
“You could have shown us this yesterday.”
Margaret replied:
“You wouldn’t have listened.”
Grace stared.
That sentence ran in the family.
I had to force you because you would not listen.
Then Daniel asked Grace privately:
“Did Emily cause the fire?”
“No.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
Then Grace explained:
electrical accident,
restricted room,
key.
Daniel said:
“So what exactly is the secret?”
Grace answered:
“That I wasn’t only the brave person.”
Then:
“I was the teenager who made a stupid choice five minutes earlier.”
Daniel nodded.
“And Emily?”
“Was eight.”
Then:
“So why has everyone treated her like she owes you?”
Grace did not answer.
Because the answer was becoming less comfortable.
Then Daniel spoke to Emily.
He told her:
he still loved her.
But he would not marry her that weekend.
He wanted:
time,
counseling,
full truth.
Emily asked:
“Do you think I’m a monster?”
“No.”
Then:
“I think you did something cruel because you’ve been angry for years and never learned what to do with it.”
That was more frightening than being called a monster.
Monsters are easy to reject.
People have to change.

Daniel postponed the wedding because Emily’s treatment of Grace violated a promise and revealed unresolved cruelty, not because the rabbit made Emily secretly responsible for the fire. Part 6 would show what Emily had actually experienced growing up under the “saved sister” story—and why resentment toward Grace had become resentment toward her scars themselves.
