Chapter 4 - THE SWITCH
DNA results arrived four days later.
Emily was not biologically related to Caroline Carter.
She was the daughter of Thomas Carter and Laura Bennett.
Emma Grace Carter.
The name on her driver’s license, college degrees, marriage certificate, and professional records belonged to another child.
Emily Rose Carter.
A child who vanished from the official record after birth.
The court sealed the result temporarily.
Judge Sloan ordered immediate genetic testing for Ashley.
This time, refusal carried consequences.
Ashley submitted.
She was Caroline and Thomas’s biological daughter.
She and Emily were half-sisters.
Not twins.
Ashley stared at the report inside a private conference room.
“This is wrong.”
Rachel said gently, “The laboratory repeated the test.”
“No.”
“Ashley—”
“No!”
She shoved the papers away.
Emily remained seated.
The truth had not yet become emotion.
It existed as pressure behind her ribs.
“What did Dad tell you?” she asked.
Ashley paced.
“He told me you were not really my sister.”
The room froze.
“When?”
“Before he died.”
“How long before?”
“Two weeks.”
“And you said nothing.”
“He was on medication. He said strange things.”
“You believed him enough to expect diamonds in the box.”
Ashley turned.
“He said Grandma stole something from me.”
“What?”
“My future.”
“That is not an answer.”
“He said there was property held under another identity. He said the box contained proof.”
“Whose identity?”
Ashley looked at the sealed evidence pouch.
“Emma’s.”
Emily stood.
“You knew Emma was connected to me.”
“I did not know you were her.”
“You knew there was another child.”
“I knew Dad had another daughter.”
“You hid that from the court.”
“I was protecting myself.”
“From what?”
“From you taking everything.”
Emily laughed once.
Not because anything was funny.
“You attacked me before the box opened.”
“Because you always get chosen.”
“By whom?”
“Grandma.”
Ashley’s voice broke.
“She left you the house. She trusted you with medical decisions. She called you first. Dad said she was preparing to cut me out because I was the only legitimate daughter who knew too much.”
Emily stared.
“Legitimate?”
Ashley realized the word too late.
She looked away.
Emily moved closer.
“What happened to Emily Rose?”
“I do not know.”
“Dad told you something.”
“He said a mistake was made at the hospital.”
“What kind of mistake?”
“I do not know.”
“Ashley.”
“He said one baby had to disappear.”
Silence spread across the room.
Margaret asked, “Why?”
Ashley shook her head.
“He would not tell me.”
But Thomas had left more than words.
He gave Ashley a storage-unit key.
Police searched the unit.
Inside were business ledgers, medical bills, and a locked steel case.
The case contained photographs of three newborn girls.
One infant wore a bracelet marked Emily R. Carter.
One wore Emma G. Carter.
One wore Ashley C. Carter.
A fourth photograph showed Eleanor carrying Emma from a side hospital entrance.
Another showed Thomas carrying a different baby toward a waiting car.
On the back, he wrote:
THE EXCHANGE IS COMPLETE.
Investigators reopened the records of St. Matthew’s Hospital.
A nurse named Patricia Wells had altered discharge forms.
She died six years earlier.
Her archived statement from an unrelated licensing inquiry mentioned receiving money from Thomas Carter to “correct a family emergency.”
The hospital listed Emily Rose Carter as discharged with Caroline.
Emma Grace Carter as discharged with Laura.
But photographs suggested the opposite.
Emily—really Emma—was raised by Caroline.
Who raised Emily Rose?
Laura Bennett’s death certificate listed no surviving children.
Charles insisted Laura never brought a baby home.
Thomas may have taken both children.
Or hidden one elsewhere.
Then Detective Morris found a private adoption payment made three days after the births.
Recipient:
St. Agnes Children’s Home.
Child admitted:
Unnamed female infant.
