Chapter 5 - RICHARD’S FIRST LIE
Richard’s first formal lie was not that Caroline had died.
It was that he did not know she was planning to leave.
Emails proved otherwise.
His private security team had photographed Caroline meeting Evelyn, a Canadian lawyer, and my uncle Arthur.
He had been watching her for months.
Then investigators recovered one of Caroline’s encrypted drafts.
Addressed to me.
Never sent.
“If this works, you will hate me for not telling you.”
I stared at that sentence until the screen blurred.
Then:
“Richard’s network is bigger than the estate. I cannot just leave. I need him to believe I am dead long enough to move the money out of reach.”
Caroline had planned a legal death strategy.
Not because she wanted to steal Richard’s assets.
Because she believed disappearing was the only way to escape his surveillance long enough to protect her own.
Then one line changed everything.
“Evelyn knows.”
Evelyn had been part of the plan.
So Richard did not invent the fake death.
He hijacked it.
Another draft contained a code:
“If Laura’s ring appears, Richard has found us.”
The ring was not a random piece of jewelry.
It was a warning signal.
Evelyn must have put it on before the burial, knowing someone who understood the code might see it.
That meant she had remained conscious enough at some point to choose the one object that could expose the false story.
Richard had wanted a sealed coffin.
Evelyn turned the seal into a message.
Once the case expanded, the emotional temptation was to make Richard responsible for every terrible possibility.
Maybe he had murdered Laura.
Maybe he had tried to murder Caroline.
Maybe every fall, every illness, every missing record pointed back to him.
That is not how good investigations work.
Suspicion must earn its conclusions.
So we let the evidence narrow and widen naturally.
Some theories died.
Others strengthened.
Richard did not need to be guilty of every fear before the acts we could prove became serious.
That distinction protected Caroline later too.
She did not have to solve every missing hour of her marriage before trusting what she already knew:
Her finances had been manipulated.
Her movements watched.
Her escape intercepted.
Her legal death monetized.
