Chapter 14 - THE FINANCIAL TRAIL
The prosecutor reconstructed Eric’s plan step by step.
Establish bank authority.
Build a narrative of decline.
Create the LLC.
Transfer the house.
Use the property and rental structure to secure financing.
Move proceeds into Cole Landscape Recovery.
Restructure debt.
Then, eventually, move me elsewhere.
Not every step completed.
Enough attempted.
Megan’s messages filled in motive.
Eric:
Mom’s getting stubborn.
Megan:
Maybe stop.
Eric:
I’m too far in.
Then:
Are you actually going to make her move?
Eric:
Eventually. House rents better without her.
Then after the backyard:
She pressed the damn alarm.
Megan:
What happened?
Eric:
Sarah showed up. Everything blew up.
No question about whether I was hurt.
Only plan failure.
Later:
I didn’t mean to hurt Mom.
That may have been true.
He did not need to want injury.
He wanted compliance and tolerated harm to obtain it.
That distinction mattered.
Then another message:
I kept thinking if she would just sign, everything could calm down.
That sentence revealed the logic of coercion.
The victim’s compliance is presented as the path to peace.
Just sign.
Just stop arguing.
Just tell them you fell.
Then everyone can calm down.
But peace purchased by surrender is not peace.
It is control with lower noise.
Eric’s treatment forced him to examine the belief underneath the debt.
He had spent years assuming the house was future security.
When his business failed, that future security began feeling immediate.
Then necessary.
Then owed.
By the time he prepared the deed, he no longer experienced my refusal as a separate adult choice.
He experienced it as me taking away something already his.
That belief did not excuse his conduct.
Understanding it helped explain why the pressure escalated so quickly.
The most difficult part was learning not to turn every old memory into evidence.
Eric had helped me many times.
Fixed gutters.
Driven me to appointments.
Carried groceries.
Those things were real.
So was the coercion.
One truth did not erase the other.
That mattered because people often think harm requires the relationship to have been fake from the beginning.
It does not.
A person can be generous in one season and dangerous in another.
What matters is what they do when your choices conflict with what they want.
