Chapter 12 - Melissa Stopped Protecting Her Brother
Melissa held out longer than Christopher.
Then the payment records reached her.
Her name appeared on enough emails that denying involvement became impossible.
Her attorney advised cooperation.
Melissa eventually admitted she knew some vendor relationships should have been disclosed.
She claimed Christopher told her Bertha approved everything informally.
At first, she believed him.
Later, she began doubting it.
The turning point came two weeks before Bertha died.
Melissa received a message from Bertha:
I am reviewing every vendor file. Do not delete or alter anything.
Melissa forwarded it to Christopher.
His response:
She’s spiraling. I’ll handle her.
Melissa told investigators that line frightened her.
Not enough to stop.
Enough to remember.
After Bertha died, Christopher called Melissa before he called me.
That fact hurt.
He said:
“Find what she copied.”
Melissa came to the house.
They searched.
When they could not find the evidence, Christopher started discussing immediate cremation.
Melissa understood why.
She helped anyway.
That was her choice.
At the chapel, she slapped me because she saw the entire plan collapsing.
Months later, Melissa apologized.
I listened.
Then said:
“You were afraid of losing your brother. So you helped him erase your sister-in-law.”
She cried.
I did not comfort her.
Not because I wanted revenge.
Because consequences sometimes require allowing another adult to sit inside the discomfort they created.
Melissa eventually entered a cooperation agreement in the financial case.
She lost her accounting role.
She repaid money traced to improper payments she had personally benefited from.
