Chapter 9 - Officers Were Already at the House Because Marcus Had Made Another Mistake
The dispatcher’s statement at the terminal was not mysterious for long.
After Marcus dropped Chloe off, he returned home.
Natalie arrived around:
4:10 a.m.
She believed Chloe had:
“gone to stay with family.”
Then Natalie saw:
broken glass from a framed wedding photograph,
a dent in the dining-room drywall,
Chloe’s handbag dumped across the kitchen counter,
and one of Chloe’s shoes near the garage entrance.
She asked:
“What happened?”
Marcus said:
“Chloe went crazy.”
Natalie looked toward:
the suitcase Marcus had packed.
“Where is she?”
“She left.”
“How?”
Silence.
Then Natalie noticed:
Chloe’s phone
on the counter.
Her wallet beside:
it.
“You said she left.”
“She did.”
“How?”
Marcus became angry.
Told Natalie:
“Stop interrogating me.”
She started:
backing away.
He punched the kitchen cabinet beside her.
Natalie left.
From her car she called:
911.
She said:
“I think something happened to his wife.”
That was the domestic-disturbance call dispatch referenced.
By the time Marcus reached the bus terminal trying to regain control of Chloe, patrol units had already been sent to:
his house.
No secret federal team.
No impossible timing.
Just:
May you like
another person finally seeing enough to call.
