Chapter 7 - WHAT HAPPENED TO ROBERT
Michael swore he had never seen the insurance policy. A handwriting expert concluded his signature had likely been copied from another document, but the discovery reopened Robert’s death investigation.
Hospital records showed Robert’s condition worsened sharply after the workshop incident. He had suffered a fractured rib and internal injuries inconsistent with a simple fall from standing height. At the time, he refused to explain what happened.
Anna remembered him saying only, “I made him choose, and he chose wrong.” She had assumed he meant Michael.
Federal agents found Grant’s former driver, Calvin Reese, living under another name in West Virginia. Calvin agreed to testify in exchange for protection.
He said Grant confronted Robert in the workshop and demanded the conservation documents. Michael was present. The argument became physical. Grant shoved Robert against a workbench. Michael moved forward—but instead of helping his father, he took the folder Robert had been protecting.
Robert fell down the short staircase into the storage area.
Michael called an ambulance only after Grant left.
Calvin’s testimony did not prove murder, but it proved concealment and obstruction.
Brittney requested to speak with Michael at the county detention center after his arrest. He entered the interview room looking smaller than she remembered. For the first time, there was no expensive suit, no practiced confidence, no family home behind him.
He admitted taking the folder. He said Grant promised the resort deal would erase every debt. When Robert fell, Michael panicked. He convinced himself his father’s cancer meant the injury did not matter.
Brittney stared at the son she had once carried through fever, the boy Robert taught to fish, the man who had stood over his injured father and calculated profit.
“Did he ask for me?” she said.
Michael began to cry.
Robert’s last conscious words in the workshop had been, “Don’t let your mother lose the house.”
Michael had answered, “I won’t.”
Then he had spent three years doing exactly that.
Brittney left without offering forgiveness.
Outside, Anna waited. She did not speak until Brittney took her hand.
The gesture surprised them both.
The trial against Grant approached, but he remained missing. Prosecutors offered Michael a reduced sentence for full cooperation. He accepted and revealed Grant’s final leverage: a judge, a county commissioner, and several bank officers had participated in the property scheme.
The case became federal.
Then Vanessa disappeared.
Her car was found near the river with the driver’s door open. Inside was her purse, her phone, and a note written in Grant’s hand.
