The hospital administrator produced the admission file. Derek had not been admitted through the emergency department. His room had been arranged under a private-pay "observation agreement" signed by a physician named Dr. Nolan Pierce. The signature authorizing family billing belonged to Marianne.

Marianne stared at it. She had never signed the form.

Bennett photographed the document. Evelyn asked for every invoice tied to Derek's stay. The charges included cardiac imaging, experimental medication, and specialist consultations that had never occurred. More than eighty thousand dollars had been billed against Marianne's home equity line.

The unknown sender texted again: Check the nurse on night shift. Room 417 was never supposed to have a patient.

Nurse Hannah Wells agreed to speak privately. She admitted Derek paid her to leave a hospital gown, an IV stand, and a disconnected monitor in the room. She had believed it was part of an insurance dispute until she overheard him threatening his mother by phone.

"Who else was involved?" Bennett asked.

Hannah looked toward the hallway camera. "Dr. Pierce. And a woman named Celeste. She kept asking when Mrs. Cole would transfer the house."

Marianne knew the name. Celeste Grant was Derek's former fiancée, a woman he claimed had left him two years earlier.
