Chapter 6 - THE THIRD CHILD
The recovered girl was Baby A.
Baby B remained missing.
Thomas claimed a second embryo implanted late and was hidden through manipulated scans.
Sophia had been told she carried one child.
Dr. Price confirmed the deception after waking in the hospital.
He said Caroline and Nathan moved Baby B before police locked the floor.
Nathan escaped custody during a courthouse transfer.
His car crossed into Washington.
A camera showed a baby carrier in the back seat.
Sophia remained hospitalized but demanded to join the search.
Doctors refused.
She turned on Daniel.
“You created this.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
“Do not say it like that helps.”
“It doesn’t.”
“Why?”
Daniel finally told the whole story.
Two years earlier, Sophia suffered a miscarriage.
She nearly died.
Daniel blamed himself because he had been away.
Thomas contacted him soon after.
Alive.
Secretive.
Offering certainty.
A second embryo.
A backup pregnancy.
A guarantee that Daniel would never lose both wife and child.
Daniel agreed.
Then each compromise made the next easier.
He lied about the embryo.
He hired Leah.
He signed the contingency agreement.
He accepted the possibility of giving away a sick child.
“I kept telling myself I was protecting you,” he said.
Sophia looked at him.
“You were protecting yourself from grief.”
The sentence broke him.
Claire traced Nathan’s car to a ferry terminal.
He boarded with a newborn.
The ferry headed toward a private island owned by the Vale family.
Police obtained a warrant.
The island estate contained a small medical suite.
Nathan was gone.
The baby was not there.
But Dr. Price’s private computer was.
It revealed a transfer code.
BLUEBIRD THREE.
A private maternity transport route operating through small airports.
Baby B was scheduled to leave Oregon at dawn.
Claire identified three possible airfields.
Daniel recognized one.
Thomas took him there as a child.
He said they were watching planes.
In reality, Daniel had seen infants transferred.
Police raced to Hillsboro.
Nathan stood beside a private jet holding an infant carrier.
Caroline was with him.
She had escaped hospital custody using a forged discharge order.
Sophia’s mother looked at Daniel.
“You were too weak to finish this.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“That is my daughter.”
Caroline smiled.
“No. She is leverage.”
Nathan opened the carrier.
It was empty.
The real baby had already left in an ambulance disguised as neonatal transport.
Claire detained them.
Caroline broke when she learned Thomas planned to abandon the Vale family.
She gave them the route.
Interstate 5 north.
False destination: Tacoma Children’s Hospital.
Real destination: an abandoned birthing center near Olympia.
Police stopped the ambulance thirty miles from the border.
Inside were two men, medical equipment, and a newborn girl.
Alive.
Stable.
Wearing no identification band.
Sophia’s second daughter returned before sunset.
For the first time, all three babies were in one secure nursery.
Leah’s son.
Sophia’s twins.
Genetic testing confirmed Daniel and Sophia were biological parents to all three.
Leah was the boy’s gestational mother.
No contract could settle the emotional truth.
Leah wanted the son she had carried.
Sophia wanted all her children.
Daniel had lost the right to decide.
A family court judge placed all three children under temporary hospital protection.
Leah received bonding access to the boy.
Sophia received access to all three.
Daniel was limited to supervised visits.
Then the nursery identification system shut down.
Alarms sounded.
One bassinet was empty.
Baby B was gone again.
I ran into the hallway.
Daniel stood near the stairwell.
He held the infant.
Security drew weapons.
“I’m not taking her,” he said.
“Put her down,” Claire ordered.
Daniel showed us a message from Thomas.
LAST CHANCE. BRING BABY B TO THE GARAGE OR SOPHIA’S SECOND CONTRACT GOES PUBLIC.
Sophia stared.
“What second contract?”
Daniel closed his eyes.
A second agreement existed.
Signed by Sophia while heavily medicated during an earlier hospitalization.
It authorized embryo donation if she became infertile.
Her signature had been obtained through deception.
Thomas intended to use it to portray Sophia as complicit.
Daniel had moved the baby because he learned Thomas’s people were coming.
Claire said, “You still think acting alone protects people.”
Daniel looked at his daughter.
