Chapter 1 - THE VOICE BEHIND THE VENT

Warm late-afternoon light spilled across the Carter family’s master bedroom, catching the cream carpet and the dark wood furniture in a soft golden glow. Two bedside lamps were already on, and the room looked exactly the way Ryan liked it at the end of a long day—orderly, quiet, expensive, controlled.

That was why the sight on the floor stopped him cold.

His seven-year-old son was kneeling beside the low metal vent near the walk-in closet, carefully pushing torn pieces of bread through the slats.

Ryan stared for half a second, trying to understand what he was looking at.

“Ethan… what the hell are you doing?”

Ethan jerked so hard he nearly fell backward. He spun around, eyes huge, face drained with fear, then lifted one shaking finger toward the vent.

“She told me not to tell you… but the old lady’s starving.”

Ryan’s expression changed instantly.

He moved toward the wall.

Before he could reach it, Claire rushed into the bedroom and threw both arms out, blocking him.

“Ryan, don’t you dare open that!”

He stopped so abruptly that he almost hit her.

For a second, none of them moved.

Then the room went dead silent.

Ryan could hear only Ethan’s breathing, Claire’s sharp panicked breaths, and the faint hum of the air system behind the wall.

Then it came.

A weak cry from inside the vent.

Thin. Fragile. Human.

Ryan slowly turned his head toward the slats.

Claire’s breathing became frantic.

A wrinkled hand pushed slowly through the metal openings.

Ethan backed away in terror, dropping the last piece of bread.

Ryan dropped to his knees beside the vent, every muscle in his body going rigid.

From behind the wall, a weak voice broke through the darkness.

“Ryan… please help me, son.”

He went completely pale.

For a second he looked like a man who had been hit hard enough to forget where he was.

Then he turned his head slowly toward Claire.

Her face had gone white. She took one step backward and could not meet his eyes.

“Why the hell did she call me son?”

May you like

Claire’s lips parted.

But no answer came.
