Chapter 1 - THE WALL VANESSA NEVER WANTED OPENED

Vanessa Cole had Ethan’s head pinned sideways against the padded silk wall before he fully understood what she was doing.
Warm afternoon sunlight poured through the tall glass doors of the Cole family’s coastal California estate, washing the private art gallery in soft gold. Pale limestone floors reflected the light beneath rows of framed paintings. Beyond the glass, the Pacific shimmered below the cliffs.
The room looked calm.
Lucy’s crying made it anything but calm.
“KEEP FIGHTING ME, YOU LITTLE BRAT. SEE WHAT HAPPENS.”
Vanessa’s fingers tightened around Ethan’s shoulder as her other hand pressed the side of his head against the padded silk panel.
Ethan twisted hard and pulled away.
At thirteen, he knew arguing with Vanessa usually made things worse.
He also knew why he had stepped between her and Lucy.
Vanessa had been screaming at his seven-year-old sister again.
And Ethan had finally had enough.
Vanessa released him.
He stumbled one step, caught himself, then turned straight back toward her.
“DON’T TOUCH HER AGAIN!”
Vanessa’s face went cold.
She seized him by both shoulders and pulled him close.
“YOU DON’T TELL ME WHAT TO DO IN MY HOUSE!”
The tall gallery doors suddenly slammed open.
Daniel Cole rushed inside.
Still dressed in the dark navy suit he had worn to a business meeting, he took in the scene in seconds—Ethan in Vanessa’s grip, Lucy sobbing beside them, Vanessa standing over both children.
His face changed instantly.
“GET YOUR HANDS OFF MY SON!”
Vanessa let go.
Daniel moved toward them.
Then Lucy made a small, frightened sound.
“Dad…”
He stopped.
Lucy slowly raised one trembling hand.
She pointed past Vanessa.
Toward the silk wall.
“Dad… look behind the wall.”
Everyone turned.
The color drained from Vanessa’s face.
A long vertical tear had opened in the elegant silk panel where Ethan’s head had been pressed moments earlier.
Behind it was darkness.
Not backing.
Not insulation.
An opening.
And hanging from somewhere inside that narrow black space were several strands of blonde hair.
Daniel stared.
Ethan stopped breathing for a moment.
Lucy moved closer to her brother.
Vanessa did not move at all.
Daniel stepped toward the wall.
Slowly, he raised one hand.
His fingertips stopped inches from the torn silk.
Behind him, Vanessa whispered his name.
Not angrily.
Fearfully.
“Daniel…”
May you like
And for the first time, Ethan realized Vanessa was no longer afraid of losing control of the children.
She was afraid of what Daniel was about to find.
