Chapter 1 - The blue light in the bouquet

Warm late-afternoon sunlight poured across the rooftop sculpture garden, turning the pale stone paving almost white and making the shallow reflecting pool shimmer beside the reception tables. Beyond the low walls, the ocean flashed silver. Guests in formal clothes drifted between cream chairs and floral arrangements, laughing softly beneath the hum of an elite family celebration.
Eight-year-old Emma Hayes stood near the pool in her ivory dress, nervous and watchful.
Vanessa Hayes, her stepmother, stood only a few feet away, elegant in a champagne dress, holding a large white-and-pink bouquet of roses.
Then, without warning, Emma lunged and grabbed the bouquet with both hands.
Vanessa jerked it back immediately.
“GIVE IT BACK, YOU LITTLE BRAT!”
But Emma pulled harder.
The ribbon-wrapped stems twisted between them, petals shook loose, and Emma ripped the bouquet completely free. Before anyone could stop her, she swung it high over her head and hurled it straight into the reflecting pool.
The flowers hit the water with a loud splash.
Several nearby guests turned.
Vanessa spun toward Emma in fury.
“YOU JUST DESTROYED THE ONLY THING HERE WORTH MORE THAN YOU.”
Then she shoved her.
Hard.
Emma fell backward into the shallow pool with a sharp splash, her dress and hair instantly soaked. She remained conscious and physically safe, but the shock made her gasp.
Michael Hayes ran into frame almost immediately.
He reached down, lifted Emma completely out of the water, and set her safely against his side before turning on Vanessa in pure rage. He slapped her hard across the face.
Vanessa staggered backward, one hand flying to her cheek. A light superficial scratch marked the skin.
Michael pulled Emma tightly against his chest with one arm.
Then he looked down.
Something in the floating bouquet had begun to blink.
He pointed sharply toward the water.
Inside the soaked roses, deep beneath the petals, a blue light flashed.
A thin dark wire showed through.
Michael stared at it in stunned disbelief while Emma clung to him, dripping.
“What the hell did you hide in there?”
Vanessa said nothing.
All the anger drained from her face, replaced by sudden, unmistakable fear.
Emma looked from the pool to Vanessa.
“She didn’t want anyone to find it.”
Vanessa froze.

And in that instant, with guests falling silent all around them and the blue light pulsing from the ruined bouquet, Michael understood that Emma had not destroyed the flowers out of childish spite.
She had been trying to expose something.
