Chapter 10 - Vanessa Was Not Charged With Trying to Kill Lily

People who heard the story later exaggerated:
everything.
Vanessa poisoned a child.
Vanessa tried to kill Lily.
Buddy saved her life.
That was not the accurate version.
Vanessa intentionally gave Lily medication that was not prescribed to her and concealed it from me.
She used resulting symptoms as part of a campaign to portray Lily as unstable and unsafe.
She fabricated at least one supposed medication-stealing event.
She repeatedly misrepresented professionals’ recommendations.
She threatened Lily with being sent away.
She planned to use one more observable episode to pressure me into residential placement.
Those facts were serious enough without adding a murder plot we could not prove.
The legal process took time.
Medical experts.
Child interviewers.
Digital records.
Therapists.
Vanessa’s own changing statements.
The resolution reflected child endangerment, unlawful medication-related conduct and falsified representations connected to Lily’s care.
There were also consequences for kicking Buddy and for the emotional abuse documented around Lily.
No cinematic life sentence.
No instant justice.
Custodial consequences, supervision, treatment requirements and restrictions on contact.
I did not build Lily’s recovery around how much Vanessa suffered.
That would keep Vanessa at the center.
Then my own conduct came under uncomfortable scrutiny too.
Not legally equivalent.
Still necessary.
Why had I allowed a romantic partner so much authority over my daughter’s care without formal parental status?
Why did Vanessa attend medical appointments alone?
Why did she have school portal access?
Why could she communicate with therapists as though she represented both of us?
Because I gave:
access.
Not permission to abuse.
But access without oversight.
I corrected it.
Vanessa was removed from:
school records,
medical portals,
therapy communication,
emergency contacts,
household security access.
Only adults with clearly defined responsibility could speak for Lily.
Then I told Lily something I needed her to hear.
“You were right when you said you didn’t take Vanessa’s medicine.”
She looked at me.
“I know.”
That hurt in exactly the way I deserved.
Then:
“I should have believed that you were telling me what happened.”
“You thought I lied.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Vanessa gave me a story that sounded organized, and I didn’t check.”
Lily thought for a moment.
Then:
“Organized can still be lying.”
May you like
Exactly.
