Chapter 13 - The Court Did Not Care That They Had Once Raised Me
The criminal case took:
fourteen months.
Frank and Carol were not sent away immediately.
There were:
hearings,
bail conditions,
discovery,
financial records,
medical records,
witness interviews.
My pregnancy delayed some:
proceedings
because my attorney and doctor prioritized:
health.
The prosecution relied on:
the locked-door setup,
messages between Frank and Carol,
the loan papers,
the attempted bank transaction,
my missing belongings upstairs,
the canceled prenatal appointment,
Marilyn’s testimony,
medical documentation,
and eventually parts of Frank and Carol’s own statements.
Frank’s attorney initially argued:

temporary restraint,
concern for Megan’s emotional state.
That position weakened badly when:

Carol’s role was treated:
differently.
She had not physically dumped:
everything? She watched. She had actively withheld phone, canceled appointment, participated in lock. Serious, but less violent.
Eventually both accepted negotiated pleas to serious state offenses involving:

and related conduct.
Frank’s plea included:
assaultive conduct.
Carol’s included:
aiding the confinement

attempted financial misuse.
I was not asked to:
forgive
in exchange.
Good.
Frank received:
a custodial sentence followed by supervision.
Not decades.
Long enough to be:
real.
Carol received:
a shorter custodial term largely suspended in favor of strict probation, counseling, financial restrictions, and no-contact provisions.
She had:
no prior record,
had eventually cooperated,
and played a lesser physical role.
Some relatives said:
too harsh.
Others:
too lenient.
I stopped caring.
Sentencing was not:
my healing plan.
The civil side was quieter.
My attorney revoked:
the power of attorney.
Locked:
credit.
Changed:
accounts.
Recovered:
nothing magical.
The earlier loans I had made remained:
mostly gifts or poorly documented debts.
I did not suddenly get back:
every dollar.
That was part of adulthood too.
Some mistakes cost:
money.
I refused to spend five years litigating $30,000 of ambiguous family loans just because I was angry.
The $150,000 attempted transfer never occurred.
My savings remained:
mine.

The warehouse inventory was liquidated.
Their house was eventually sold under financial pressure.
