Chapter 1 - The Camera Above Claire’s Head

Claire knew exactly how she wanted Ethan to find her.
She stood in the library foyer of Richard Vale’s Virginia estate, surrounded by dark walnut shelves and warm afternoon light, while Richard stared at her from several feet away. They had been arguing for almost fifteen minutes, but the moment Claire heard footsteps somewhere beyond the corridor, the argument stopped being an argument.
She grabbed the upper layer of her cream blouse and ripped it open.
The fabric tore across one shoulder, leaving the ivory camisole beneath completely intact. Richard’s expression changed from anger to confusion.
“What are you doing?”
Claire did not answer.
She violently loosened her red hair, dragged her fingernails across one cheek until a superficial red mark appeared, then slapped herself once.
Richard froze.
Claire stared directly into his eyes and screamed.
“Touch me again, you filthy old bastard! I’ll make your own son bury you!”
Richard’s face drained.
“You’re out of your mind.”
Heavy footsteps were already approaching.
Claire’s expression transformed instantly.
Her shoulders collapsed. Her eyes filled. Her breathing became ragged.
Then Ethan rushed through the doorway.
He stopped.
His wife stood in front of his father with her blouse torn, hair disheveled and a red mark across her cheek. Richard was visibly furious.
Claire turned toward Ethan as though he were the first safe person she had seen.
“Ethan! Look what he did!”
Ethan’s face changed almost instantly.
Shock.
Disbelief.
Then rage.
Richard held up both hands.
“Ethan, wait.”
Claire pointed at him.
“Your father tried to force me!”
Ethan charged.
Richard had barely finished saying his son’s name when Ethan’s fist struck him across the mouth.
Richard staggered backward against the heavy desk.
A tiny split opened along his lower lip.
Ethan stepped forward again.
Richard wiped his mouth and looked at the small trace of blood on his fingers.
Then his shock turned to fury.
“She framed me, idiot!”
Ethan did not believe him.
Why would he?
Claire was his wife.
Richard had spent years making it easy for Ethan to believe the worst about him.
Ethan advanced again.
Richard saw his son’s shoulder move and reacted.
He drove one defensive kick into Ethan’s torso.
Ethan flew backward into the padded wall panel.
The impact stunned him but did not knock him unconscious.
Claire’s expression cracked.
For the first time, the panic on her face became real.
Richard did not attack again.
He stood breathing hard, one hand near his split lip.
Then he raised one finger.
He pointed above Claire.
“Look up,” he said. “Then hate her.”
Ethan stared at his father.
Richard kept pointing.
Ethan slowly lifted his eyes.
Claire did too.
There, partially concealed beneath the decorative walnut cornice above the library entrance, was a small fixed security camera.
Claire went completely pale.
She knew about the estate’s exterior cameras.
She knew about the cameras near the wine cellar after a theft several years earlier.
She did not know Richard had installed one inside the library foyer.
Three antique manuscripts had been moved during renovation two months earlier, and the insurance company required temporary interior surveillance until the collection was re-cataloged.
The camera had been recording before Claire entered the room.
Before she ripped her blouse.
Before she scratched herself.
Before she hit herself.
Before Ethan arrived.
Ethan stared upward for several seconds.
Then he looked at Claire.
She stopped crying.
That frightened him more than anything.
Richard walked to the bookcase, opened a narrow cabinet and removed the local recording unit.
Claire moved.
“Richard, don’t.”
Ethan looked at her.
Not Dad.
Not please.
Not you’re misunderstanding.
She had told Richard not to retrieve the recording.
Richard set the unit on the desk.
“You want to know what your wife accused me of?”
Ethan’s breathing remained heavy.
Richard wiped his lip again.
“Watch what happened before you entered.”
Claire suddenly stepped toward Ethan.
“Don’t let him manipulate you.”
Ethan turned.
She stopped.
The room had changed.
For the first time in three years of marriage, Claire looked at Ethan and could not immediately tell him what he was supposed to believe.
Richard pressed playback.
On the monitor, Claire appeared standing perfectly composed.
Her blouse was intact.
Her hair was neat.
Her cheek was unmarked.
Then the recorded Claire grabbed her own blouse.
Ripped it.
Scratched herself.
Slapped herself.
And screamed an accusation against a man who had never touched her.
Ethan stopped breathing.
The footage kept playing.
Then came Ethan himself.
Charging.
Punching his father.
Richard stumbling.
Richard warning him.
Then the defensive kick.
No ambiguity.
No missing angle.
No convenient cut.
Claire had staged the entire thing.
Ethan slowly looked away from the screen.
“What the hell is wrong with you?”
Claire backed toward the desk.
“You don’t understand.”
Richard laughed once through his injured lip.
“Oh, he’s going to understand.”
Claire stared at him.
Something about Richard’s expression frightened her again.
Not because of the camera.
Because the camera had only exposed what she had done today.
Richard had discovered something else before she walked into that room.
Something important enough that Claire had decided a false assault accusation was worth the risk.
Richard opened the desk drawer.
Inside was a thick folder with the words HAWTHORNE RESTORATION REVIEW printed across the front.
Ethan looked at it.
Then at Claire.

Richard said quietly, “She needed you to hate me before I showed you this.”
