At sentencing, Vanessa’s attorney described the case as a “catastrophic collapse of judgment.” I hated the phrase at first. It sounded too small for six weeks of planning.
Then I understood collapse did not mean one impulsive moment. A person can collapse gradually, decision by decision, while appearing organized to everyone else. That did not reduce responsibility. It explained why the house could look normal while Mom’s world became smaller every day.
