Chapter 1 - The fingers behind the plaster

Warm afternoon light stretched across the private family wing of the Bennett estate, reflecting softly off polished oak floors and brass sconces. Framed family portraits lined the cream plaster walls—ski trips, weddings, school photographs, generations of Bennetts smiling as if nothing ugly had ever happened inside the house.
Grace Miller was halfway down the hallway when she heard it.
At first, she thought the sound came from another room.
She stopped.
Listened.
There it was again.
Crying.
Muffled.
Small.
Coming from inside the wall.
Grace turned toward the plaster between a linen closet and one of the framed portraits.
“Hello?”
The crying stopped.
Then a terrified voice answered from somewhere behind the wall.
“Grace?”
Her stomach dropped.
She grabbed the short-handled hammer from the maintenance cart nearby and struck the plaster once.
Hard.
CRACK.
A narrow fracture split through the cream wall. A tiny opening appeared.
Immediately, a child screamed from the darkness.
“GRACE! HELP ME!”
Grace recognized the voice.
Noah.
She lifted the hammer again.
Before she could swing—
Vanessa Bennett stormed into the hallway.
The moment Vanessa saw the cracked plaster, her face changed.
She did not ask what happened.
She kicked Grace hard in the side.
Grace fell onto the oak floor.
The hammer flew from her hand and skidded several feet away.
Vanessa stood over her.
“MIND YOUR DAMN BUSINESS. HE STAYS IN THERE.”
Grace stared up at her.
For a second, even the pain in her ribs seemed to disappear beneath the horror of what Vanessa had just admitted.
Footsteps approached from the far end of the hallway.
Daniel Bennett appeared.
He had just returned from a meeting downstairs and was still wearing a black suit and white shirt.
He saw Grace on the floor.
The hammer.
The damaged wall.
Vanessa standing beside it.
“Grace?”
She pointed desperately.
“THERE’S A CHILD IN THERE!”
Daniel froze.
His eyes locked on the cracked plaster.
Vanessa reacted instantly.
She stepped directly in front of him.
“DON’T LISTEN TO THAT LYING BITCH.”
Daniel stared at her.
Then at the wall she was deliberately blocking.
Something changed in his expression.
He should have moved past her.
He should have gone directly to the wall.
Instead, rage took over.
Daniel slapped Vanessa hard across the face.
Her head snapped sideways.
A small trickle of blood appeared at the corner of her mouth, and she lost her balance, dropping onto the floor.
Daniel turned away from her immediately.
He crossed to the wall.
Grace remained on the floor, one arm pressed against her side.
Vanessa looked up.
And for the first time, she appeared terrified.
Daniel leaned toward the narrow opening.
“Noah?”
Nothing.
Then—
small fingers pushed through the cracked plaster.
Daniel stopped breathing.
Grace gasped.
The fingers trembled desperately in the opening.
“Dad…”
Daniel’s face drained of color.
Behind him, Vanessa stared at those tiny fingers as though the wall itself had just testified against her.
And Daniel suddenly realized he was not looking at the beginning of something terrible.
May you like
He was looking at the first moment he had finally caught it.
