Chapter 13 - Daniel Saw Vanessa Again After Four Years

The meeting happened because of shareholder paperwork unrelated to the estate.
Public conference room.
Counsel nearby.
No need for emotional reunion.
Vanessa looked older.
Daniel probably did too.
They signed documents.
Then Vanessa asked:
“How is your mother?”
“Fine.”
“Still at the estate?”
“Yes.”
“Rose garden?”
“Still there.”
Vanessa smiled slightly.
“I knew she’d save it.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You tried to make her unable to.”
“I know.”
No defense.
Then Vanessa asked:
“Does she hate me?”
Daniel answered:
“Sometimes.”
Fair.
Then:
“Do you?”
He considered.
“No.”
That surprised her.
“Why not?”
“Because hatred is too much maintenance.”
Vanessa almost laughed.
Then Daniel added:
“I don’t trust you.”
She nodded.
Different.
Then she asked whether he ever thought the development had been a good idea.
He told her about the three-acre sale.
She looked stunned.
“You sold some?”
“Yes.”
“For how much?”
“Fair value.”
She laughed once.
“So after all that, she agreed.”
“Yes.”
Vanessa looked down.
That hurt more than total rejection would have.
Because it proved coercion had never been necessary.
Eleanor could change her mind.
She simply needed autonomy.
Then Daniel said:
“You wanted her no to mean incapacity because you couldn’t tolerate it being a choice.”
Vanessa nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
That was enough.
No reconciliation.
No return to marriage.
They finished signing.
May you like
Then left through separate doors.
