Chapter 1 - Lily Was Trying to Tell Daniel Who Hurt Her

Emma was already covering Lily when Daniel entered the kitchen.

The eight-year-old girl lay curled on the pale stone floor beneath Emma’s body, her pink dress bunched around her knees and both hands gripping the housekeeper’s gray uniform. Emma was on her knees, arms wrapped completely around Lily as though she could turn herself into a wall.

Victoria stood behind them.

A metal golf club was raised above her shoulder.

Then she swung.

The club struck across the padded upper back of Emma’s uniform with a hard metallic thud.

Emma cried out but curled tighter around Lily.

Victoria raised it again.

“Move, bitch. I’ll break that brat before she breaks me.”

The second strike landed across Emma’s protected coat and upper back.

Lily screamed.

Emma refused to move.

Then Victoria lifted the golf club for another strike.

The rear wooden doors flew open.

Daniel stepped into the kitchen.

He stopped so abruptly that the door swung behind him without his noticing.

For several seconds he could not understand what he was seeing.

His wife held one of the estate’s golf clubs in both hands.

His longtime housekeeper was kneeling on the floor.

And beneath Emma was his daughter.

“Victoria… what the hell?”

Victoria froze.

The golf club remained raised.

Daniel’s eyes moved to Lily.

Her face was pressed against Emma’s shoulder. Tears covered her cheeks, and several faint superficial scratches crossed one side of her face.

“Lily.”

His daughter slowly lifted her head.

“Daddy…”

Daniel stepped forward.

Lily tried to speak.

“She… she did—”

Emma immediately pulled her closer as Victoria shifted her weight.

That movement told Daniel enough to change direction.

He looked at Emma.

Then at Lily’s cheek.

Then at the golf club.

Shock left his face.

Something much colder replaced it.

Daniel walked toward Victoria.

For the first time, she moved backward.

“She came at me,” Victoria said.

Daniel kept walking.

“She’s worthless. Just like her mother.”

He stopped.

The kitchen went completely still.

Daniel looked at her.

“Say that again.”

Victoria’s mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Daniel reached for the golf club.

Victoria tightened her grip.

He grabbed the metal shaft with both hands and yanked it free.

The club slipped from her fingers and struck the floor beside his leg with a sharp clang.

Daniel immediately stepped between Victoria and the two people on the floor.

His hand curled into a fist.

He did not use it.

Instead he said, “Back away from my daughter.”

Victoria stared at him.

“Daniel, she’s manipulating you.”

“Back away.”

Something in his voice finally reached her.

Victoria took one step.

Then another.

Daniel crouched beside Emma without turning his back completely on his wife.

“Can you move?”

Emma nodded, though her face tightened when she shifted.

“Lily?”

The girl reached immediately for her father.

Daniel lifted her carefully.

She buried her face against his chest.

“What happened?”

Victoria started talking.

“Emma has been poisoning her against me. Lily came back from another visit with Rachel acting like a little monster, and when I tried to correct her—”

Lily screamed into Daniel’s shirt.

“No!”

Daniel froze.

Victoria did too.

Lily pulled back enough to look at him.

Her whole face trembled.

“No, Daddy. Mommy didn’t scratch me.”

Daniel stared at the faint lines across her cheek.

Nobody had mentioned Rachel scratching her.

Not yet.

“What are you talking about?”

Lily looked toward Victoria.

Immediately, fear returned.

Daniel moved so his body blocked the sight line.

“Look at me.”

She did.

“Who told you Mommy scratched you?”

Lily swallowed.

“Victoria.”

Daniel’s chest tightened.

“Did your mom scratch you?”

Lily shook her head.

“Who did?”

Another glance toward Victoria.

Emma answered quietly.

“She’s been trying to get Lily to say the scratches happened during Rachel’s visit.”

Daniel turned to her.

“What?”

Victoria laughed sharply.

“This is insane.”

Emma carefully pushed herself upright using the cabinet.

Daniel still held Lily.

“What happened to her face?”

Emma looked at Victoria.

Then at Daniel.

“Your wife grabbed Lily this morning when Lily refused to repeat what she’d been told.”

Daniel felt his arms tighten protectively around his daughter.

Lily whispered:

“She said if I tell you the truth, Mommy comes back and Victoria loses everything.”

Daniel looked at his wife.

The arrogance had disappeared.

For the first time, Victoria seemed less worried about the golf club than about what Lily had just said.

Daniel asked one question.

“What truth?”

Lily began crying again.

Emma answered for her.

“The truth about what’s been happening after every visit with Rachel.”

Victoria turned pale.

And Daniel suddenly understood that the violence he had interrupted was not the beginning of the story.

May you like

It was what happened when an eight-year-old finally refused to keep repeating the ending Victoria had written for her.
