Chapter 14 - Vanessa Saw Emily Again Only After Emily Asked

Seven years after the kitchen incident, Emily was sixteen.

Vanessa had moved to Chicago and rebuilt her event-consulting career.

No public scandal destroyed:

her.

She stepped away from children’s-health campaigns voluntarily.

Worked mostly in hospitality and corporate events.

She remained in therapy for years.

Daniel rarely heard about her.

Then Emily surprised him.

“I want to see Vanessa.”

He looked up.

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then maybe wait until you know.”

She rolled her eyes.

“Curiosity counts.”

Fair.

They arranged a meeting in Dr. Myers’s old practice, now run by another family therapist.

Daniel waited outside.

Emily entered alone.

No wig.

Not as statement.

It was July.

Hot.

Vanessa stood when she entered.

For one second, Vanessa’s eyes went automatically to Emily’s bare scalp.

Emily noticed.

Vanessa noticed that Emily noticed.

Then Vanessa deliberately returned her gaze to Emily’s eyes.

“Hi.”

“Hi.”

They sat.

Vanessa did not ask forgiveness.

Good.

Emily started directly.

“Why did you burn it?”

Vanessa took a breath.

“Because I wanted the paper.”

“I know.”

“And because you refusing the new wig made me feel like everything I had built was falling apart.”

“That’s stupid.”

“Yes.”

“You could’ve canceled the photo.”

“Yes.”

“The company didn’t even require me.”

“I learned that too late.”

“No. You knew.”

Vanessa stopped.

Emily was right.

Lauren’s emails had already said sponsorship could continue without:

her.

Vanessa corrected herself.

“I knew the contract didn’t require you. I did not emotionally accept that the campaign could still be successful without the family image I had planned.”

Better.

Then Emily asked:

“Did you think I was ugly bald?”

Vanessa’s face broke.

“No.”

“Then what?”

“I thought people would look at the baldness before they saw the family.”

Emily stared.

“That sounds like you thought it was ugly.”

Vanessa considered.

“I think I treated visibility as something dangerous.”

Closer.

Then:

“I wanted control over what strangers noticed.”

Emily leaned back.

“That’s their problem.”

“Yes.”

Another question.

“Did Dad really prefer the wig?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“Sometimes, yes.”

Emily already knew.

“But he never told me to force you.”

“No.”

“Did you lie when you said he’d be ashamed?”

“Yes.”

There.

Then Emily asked:

“Do you still want to be my stepmom?”

Vanessa looked surprised.

“No.”

Emily blinked.

Vanessa continued.

“I wanted that role so badly once that I confused wanting it with deserving it. I don’t think I have a right to want it from you now.”

Emily nodded.

That answer helped.

Then Vanessa said:

“I’m glad you came.”

Emily answered:

“I don’t know if I am yet.”

Fair.

They ended after forty minutes.

No hug.

A handshake felt absurd, so neither attempted.

Outside, Daniel stood when Emily emerged.

“Well?”

She shrugged.

“She’s less annoying.”

Daniel laughed.

“High praise.”

Then Emily added:

“I still don’t forgive the fire.”

“You don’t need to.”

“I think I forgive some of the rest.”

Also allowed.

May you like

Closure did not need one setting.
