Chapter 1 - THE WALL VANESSA DIDN’T WANT US TO SEE

Warm afternoon light poured through the tall glass doors of the Cole family’s California coastal estate, washing the private art gallery in gold. Pale limestone floors reflected the sun. Framed paintings hung in perfect rows against hand-painted silk wall panels. Beyond the windows, the Pacific stretched blue beneath the cliffs.
Thirteen-year-old Ethan Cole stood face-to-face with his stepmother.
Seven-year-old Lucy was beside them, already crying.
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
Then she slapped Ethan.
One hard open-palm strike landed across his face.
Ethan bent forward instinctively, one hand flying toward his cheek.
“GET DOWN. YOU’RE NOTHING BUT A DAMN PROBLEM.”
Lucy sobbed harder.
Vanessa remained over Ethan, shouting as though humiliating him had somehow proved something.
But Ethan pushed himself upright.
His cheek burned. His eyes were wet. He was frightened.
He was also furious.
“DON’T TOUCH HER AGAIN!”
Vanessa moved immediately.
She grabbed Ethan firmly by both shoulders and pulled him close enough that their faces were inches apart.
“YOU DON’T TELL ME WHAT TO DO IN MY HOUSE, YOU LITTLE BRAT!”
The tall gallery doors suddenly swung open.
Daniel Cole rushed inside.
He had come directly from a meeting in another wing of the estate, still wearing his dark navy suit. He saw Vanessa gripping Ethan. He saw the red mark beginning to spread across his son’s cheek.
Then he saw Lucy crying beside them.
“GET YOUR HANDS OFF MY SON!”
Daniel strode across the limestone floor.
Vanessa released Ethan and turned toward him.
For several seconds, the confrontation became almost perfectly still.
Daniel stood between his children and Vanessa.
Ethan moved toward Lucy.
Vanessa lifted her chin as though she were preparing to defend herself.
Then Lucy made a sound.
“Dad…”
Daniel turned.
Lucy’s small body was trembling.
She raised one hand.
Her finger pointed past Vanessa.
Toward the silk-covered wall.
“Dad… look behind the wall.”
Daniel followed her finger.
So did Ethan.
Vanessa turned last.
Her face instantly lost its color.
A long vertical tear had opened in one of the elegant hand-painted silk panels.
The dark space behind it should not have existed.
Daniel knew enough about the estate renovation to understand that immediately.
But that was not what stopped him.
Several long strands of blonde hair hung through the narrow opening.
Nothing else was visible.
No face.
No hand.
No movement.
Just blonde hair dangling from darkness behind a wall inside Daniel’s own home.
Lucy backed into Ethan.
Ethan put one arm around her.
Daniel stared at the opening.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
Her anger was gone.
May you like
What replaced it was unmistakable.
Fear.
