Chapter 13 - Daniel Sold the Virginia House

After Margaret moved permanently, Daniel lived alone in the house for almost a year.

He hated:

it.

Too large.

Too quiet.

Every room carried somebody.

His father in the garage.

Laura in the few childhood photographs he still had.

Margaret in the kitchen.

Claire in the dining room.

The frying pan incident in the living room.

Daniel finally admitted he did not want to preserve the building merely because Robert once had.

He sold it.

Margaret was surprised.

“You love that house.”

“I loved people in that house.”

Different.

The sale paid off the remaining loan and reimbursed Daniel for the settlement of Margaret’s life-estate interest.

The rest remained his under the property arrangements governing the marriage.

No family war.

No magical inheritance.

A house sold because a house no longer fit:

life.

Then Daniel bought a smaller place twenty minutes from Margaret’s community.

One-story.

Guest room.

Wide hallways.

Margaret immediately said:

“You bought an old-person house.”

Daniel answered:

“I bought a house without thirty-seven stairs.”

“You have two.”

“I have twelve.”

“Ancient.”

Normal returned slowly.
