Chapter 1 - The Poolside Attack

Warm late-afternoon light washed over the poolside courtyard of the Palm Springs villa, turning the pale stone almost white and the water a bright, impossible turquoise. White stucco walls reflected the sun. The glass doors to the house stood half open. Desert mountains sat in the distance like a painted backdrop.
Margaret Bennett had only been trying to speak when Vanessa shoved her.
It happened fast and with full intention. Vanessa planted both hands against her mother-in-law’s upper body and drove her backward into the pool. Margaret hit the water with a hard splash, disappeared beneath the surface for a second, then fought her way back up, coughing and disoriented. She reached the edge with one hand and tried to pull herself out.
Vanessa didn’t help.
She stepped right up to the coping, barefoot against the warm stone, and when Margaret got enough leverage to lift her head and shoulder above the surface, Vanessa kicked her squarely in the face.
“GET OUT OF HERE, YOU USELESS OLD HAG!”
The kick forced Margaret backward into the water again. She cried out, shocked as much as hurt, then resurfaced and clung to the edge once more, sputtering and trying to breathe. Her light blue blouse clung to her shoulders. Wet hair stuck to her face. Still, she managed to gasp, “DANIEL WON’T FORGIVE YOU FOR THIS.”
Vanessa crouched near the edge with a cruel smile. “YOU THINK HE’D BELIEVE AN OLD HAG LIKE YOU?”
That was the moment the glass door slid wider.
Daniel Bennett had come home carrying a bouquet of red roses. He had bought them on impulse on the drive back from a meeting, thinking he’d surprise his mother, who had been having a rough week, and maybe salvage the tense atmosphere that had hung over the house for months. But the second he stepped into the doorway and saw his mother in the pool, fingers white against the edge, and Vanessa standing over her, every thought in his head vanished except one.
He slammed the bouquet onto the floor inside the doorway so hard the roses scattered.
“STAY AWAY FROM MY MOTHER!”
Vanessa whipped around. Her face changed instantly, not into remorse, but into the startled calculation of someone caught too early.
Daniel strode through the doorway and across the courtyard. He did not teleport, did not hesitate, did not ask for an explanation. He walked straight at his wife, fury visible in every hard step. Margaret stayed behind them, still clinging to the pool edge, conscious but shaken.
The moment Daniel stood directly in front of Vanessa, he struck her with one swift, hard open-handed slap.
Her head snapped to the side. She staggered back, dazed, but remained on her feet. No blood, no second blow, just silence dropping over the courtyard like a sheet of metal.

Behind them, Margaret stayed at the pool’s edge, breathing hard, water streaming from her sleeves.
Inside the house, through the glass, the dropped bouquet of roses lay scattered across the floor.
