Chapter 11 - Victoria’s Apology Failed Twice Before It Became Honest
Victoria’s first letter to Emma began:
I am sorry the conflict at Bellamy became physical.
Emma stopped reading.
Conflict had not raised a riding crop.
Victoria had.
The letter continued by describing stress, blended-family tension and fear of losing Lily.
Emma gave it to her lawyer and never responded.
Second apology:
I should not have allowed my frustration to reach the point where I struck you.
Better.
Then:
Your hostility toward my role in Lily’s life contributed to an atmosphere in which neither of us behaved rationally.
Emma laughed.
Still spreading responsibility.
Then almost a year later came a third.
Different.
I hit you with the riding crop because you refused to sign a statement withdrawing a complaint I knew could expose my interference with Lily’s school record.
Emma kept reading.
I threatened Lily’s enrollment because I believed Bellamy was a place where my influence outweighed yours.
Specific.
I treated your position as Lily’s mother as something I could gradually reduce if I made Daniel’s home and school appear more stable than yours.
There.
Then:
You said things about me that were cruel and sometimes unfair. None of those things caused me to falsify context or strike you.
That was accurate.
Then Victoria addressed Lily.
Not directly.
Through Emma and Daniel.
I will not ask Lily to forgive me. If she ever asks why I behaved that way, tell her I wanted control more than I wanted fairness.
Emma finished the letter.
Did she forgive Victoria?
Not exactly.
She stopped needing an apology after the school corrected Lily’s record.
Still, accuracy mattered.
Then Victoria wrote Daniel.
She apologized for using his trust.
For giving his lawyer selected school records.
For describing interpretations as observations.
Then:
I knew you were already frustrated with Emma, and I used that.
Daniel read the sentence several times.
Because it required him to admit:
she had something available to use.
Then the riding crop.
Your slap was wrong. It happened after you took the crop from me. I do not use what I did first to pretend your choice belonged to me.
Daniel appreciated that.
Again:
proportion.
Then Victoria asked for nothing.
No reconciliation.
No access to Lily.
No return to Bellamy.
