“Are you sure?” Maisie asked.
Claire smiled through tears.
“You brought me my mother. I trust you with anything.”
During the vows, Ethan looked at Claire and said, “I promise never to confuse protection with control.”
Evelyn cried hardest at that line.
After the ceremony, Claire gave Maisie a small box.
Inside was a bracelet with two tiny charms.
A locket.
And a blue house.
Maisie hugged her without asking.
Claire held her tightly.
Years later, people still told the dramatic version.
The bride grabbing the locket.
The child crying against the hallway wall.
The groom asking what happened.
“She gave it to me.”
“Your mother died.”
“Where did you see her?”
It sounded like a mystery.
