Chapter 7 - WHEN THE WORLD STARTED WATCHING

The pilot landed the plane on an abandoned military runway along the Maine coast with one engine dead and the other burning.

Emergency crews arrived within minutes, but Charles refused a hospital. The sabotage proved that Voss had access to their movements. The only advantage left was speed.

They continued by armored vehicles to the harbor, then crossed rough water in a Coast Guard cutter arranged through a federal contact. By sunrise, the red lighthouse from Anna's drawing appeared through fog.

Ward 12 was hidden beneath the island.

Federal agents breached the main building while Charles, Daniel, Elise, and Julian remained in a protected command vehicle. Cameras revealed empty hospital rooms, restraints, and refrigerated cabinets filled with unlabeled compounds.

No patients.

Then Elise saw a symbol painted near a service corridor: a small blue bird.

"My mom used to draw that for me."

Agents followed the corridor to a sealed elevator descending below sea level.

Inside the underground ward, they found eleven people living in locked rooms. Some were former trial patients. Others were researchers who had threatened to expose Meridian.

Anna Harper was not there.

But her voice was.

A recording began over the intercom.

"Elise, if you found this, I'm sorry I wasn't brave enough to keep you safe. Voss moved me when he learned I copied the formula. The cure is not a drug. It is time. Stop the inhibitor, support the body, and the nerves may recover. But Julian is not the only child."

A screen illuminated with names and photographs.

Hundreds of children across the country had received Meridian-sponsored injections through school programs.

Julian stared at the list. "There are more like me."

Charles understood the scale instantly. Voss had created illness, sold treatment, and built a market from stolen childhoods.

The live body-camera footage was being transmitted to federal servers. Somehow it leaked to the public. Within minutes, millions watched agents uncover the ward.

For once, Charles did not stop the broadcast.

"Let the world see," he said.

A final door opened at the end of the corridor.

Miriam Hale stood inside holding a syringe against Anna Harper's neck.

Anna was alive, thin and gray-haired, but unmistakable.

Elise screamed, "Mom!"

Miriam looked into the camera. "Bring the girl down, or Anna dies."

Charles grabbed Elise before she could run from the vehicle.

"She wants you because your mother hid something with you."

Elise reached into the lining of her old hoodie and tore open a seam. Inside was a tiny memory card wrapped in plastic.

Anna had hidden the evidence with her daughter years earlier.

The files on the card contained trial records, payment ledgers, and video testimony from Voss himself.

Miriam's leverage was collapsing live before the world.

Federal negotiators stalled her while Daniel searched building plans. Julian noticed an old ventilation shaft connecting the command level to the room.

"Elise can fit," he said.

Charles stared at him. "No."

Elise held the memory card out. "She is my mother."

"And you are a child."

"I was a child every night I slept outside. Nobody came then."

Charles had no answer.

This time he did not order her.

He asked, "What do you need from me?"

May you like

Elise looked toward the lighthouse.

"Believe me one more time."
